アメリカのウエストバージニア州に留学中の酒井萌衣さんから第4回目の留学報告が届きました。

　今回のテーマが留学を通して成長したこと、つまりレポートの焦点がこれまでの様に現在ではなく過去に切り替わっていることに、この留学生活がすでに終わりに近づいていることを実感させられます。始まったばかりだと思っていた留学生活も六ヶ月目に突入し、飛ぶように過ぎていく時間とともに数えきれないほどの経験をしました。 

　まず、この半年で確実に身についたのは「なんとかする」能力だと感じます。とにかく、右も左も分からない留学生にとっては、なんとかしなければならないことが多すぎます。 

　初めに直面した問題は提出物についてでした。現地研修の関係で一週間遅れての登校だった私は学校で使用するchromebookについての説明を受けることもなく、よく分からないまま使っていたある日、私の提出物についての成績がすべて０になっていることに気が付きました。これはまずいと思い、次の日に全ての教科担当の先生にその時点で提出し直したら成績をつけ直してくれるかを聞き回ったことを覚えています。その一日は忙しさのせいか、いつよりも短く感じました。それでも、これらを全て解決したことの達成感を忘れることはないでしょう。 

　そして、次に挙げられるのは部活についてです。これはごく最近のできごとです。何かしらの部活に入りたいとかねがね思っていた私は春シーズンにしてようやくテニス部に入ることに決めました。そこでテニス部の友達に顧問のメールアドレスを教えてもらい、すぐに活動場所や時間などの情報について尋ねました。しかし驚くほどに話はすぐ進み、その日のうちに入部のための書類一式を受け取ることができました。これもまた一週間遅れだったため、大急ぎで全ての書類を記入しました。こんなに沢山の書類をもらって記入したのは久しぶりだったように感じます。 

　故郷を離れ、何もかも違う国で一年間学ぶ際に経験するのは楽しいことばかりではありませんが、この世の終わりだと思えるほどの困難も乗り越えてみれば大したことのないことに思えることもあります。山の高さは登ってみなければわかりません。この一年は、私がこれまで過ごしてきた人生の中で最も短く、濃い一年となるでしょう。 

 The theme made me realize that my exchange program is over half way. Time flies. I had a ton of precious experiences in these six months. For an exchange student, everything was new and unknown, which definitely grew my ability to solve problems. 

 The first problem that I faced was about assignments. Since we had a language camp in Missouri, I was already a week behind all the students on my first day at school. One day, I noticed that all my assignments were not submitted. I decided to ask every single teacher if they would update my grade for all the missing assignments. Fortunately, my grades were soon  updated. It was quite a tough experience to see low grades caused by missing assignments in the very first month. Yet, I’m sure that was one of the precious experiences and helped me to improve my ability to solve problems on my own.  

 Another experience that I learned from was my tennis team. This happened recently. I had been thinking of playing any kind of sports in the school team, and I finally decided to join the tennis team in spring. Asking  my friend for the coach’s email address, I emailed him immediately. Soon,I got a ton of paperworks. That was also a week late to join, so I rushed to fill them all out. That was the first time in a couple months to have a ton of paperworks to fill out.  

 Not every experience is fun while you live in another country. Still, you will absolutely learn a lot, and sometimes, the problems you keep suffering are not as hard as you think. You can never tell how high it is at the foot of the mountain.
