アメリカに留学中の酒井明衣さんから第3回目の留学報告が届きました。

　明けましておめでとうございます。

　生まれて初めてのアメリカでのお正月は、神社の娘としては少し物足りない気持ちもありましたが、その分クリスマスを十分すぎるくらいに過ごせたのでいい塩梅になったかと思います。私の人生で一番長かったクリスマスシーズンは、サンクスギビングが終わった途端に始まりました。

　かぼちゃやターキーやオレンジ色に覆われていたお店の棚は、サンタクロースやグリンチ、緑に赤へと様変わりしました。たくさんの家が綺麗なイルミネーションに身を包み、どこでもかしこでも聞こえてくるのはクリスマスの音楽ばかりです。学校や町全体がすっかり同じ空気で満たされたようでした。

　ところで、あなたは何種類のクッキーを知っていますか？皆さんもおそらくご存じの通り、この国ではクリスマスにはクッキーを焼くのが伝統です。私自身も家族と４種類のクッキーを焼きました。なんと人によっては１５種類ものクッキーを焼くこともあるそうです。私はそれを聞いた時、焼く量の多さよりも、そもそもそこまで沢山の種類のクッキーが存在することに驚きました。ですが、考えてみれば日本にも焼き餅、草餅、きな粉餅など、地域によっても数えきれない種類のお餅が存在します。保存と工夫が利き、小分けになる、少ない調理工程で済むなどのことから、これらは日本とアメリカにおける大きな文化の違いであると同時に、大きな括りで見てみると同じ性質を持っているようにも思えます。

　今回のテーマである文化の違いについて考えてみて、それらの多くはもとを辿れば同じ感情や理由があって生まれたが、地域によって気候や土地柄が様々に作用してできたものなのではないかと思うようになりました。

　文化は人々の生き方、考え方に強く影響します。私の周りには、違う文化の中で育った、異なる文化の中で過ごした経験のある人がとても多いです。世界にはどれだけの知らないことや新しいことがあるのか、日々想像を膨らませています。

 Everything turned into red, green and Santa Claus from orange, turkey and pumpkins after Thanksgiving. All of the town seemed to be waiting for Christmas, one of the biggest events of the year. Many experiences were new to me because it is not the most important holiday in my country. I think the importance of New Year’s Day is one of the reasons. Most of us are too focused on it to celebrate Christmas.

 During the Christmas season, I noticed there are various cookies in this country. Since we don’t have many kinds of cookies in Japan, I was so surprised that everyone talks about different types of cookies. In my opinion, mochi is quite similar for us. Mochi is a kind of sweets made by sticky rice. It is often made and eaten on New Year in each family. Also, every family has their own way to eat mochi on New Year’s Day. 

 Both of them sound so much different each other. However, discovering their features, I see some common points in them. They are strongly related with traditional culture, don’t need complicated cooking processes, and are usually shared. These facts brought me a new perspective about culture differences, which is the theme of this report. I felt every culture was classically based on the same passion or feelings, but the elements in the countries such as climate or land led them to different outcomes.
