              人は大数の法則を理解するのにとても苦労します。行動の数が増えれば増えるほど、何かが起こる確率も大きくなっていきます。例えば、宝くじの当選確率を考えてみましょう。日本では、13,983,816分の1です。毎週約3,000万人が購入しているので、2〜3人が当選することになります。これが当たり前なのです。これを勘違いしてしまうのは、「誰か」が当たる確率ではなく、「私たち」が当たる確率だと考えてしまうからです。

              宝くじ売り場の中には、たくさんの当選券を売ることで有名になるところがあります。地域のせいだとか、そこに住んでいる幸運なペットだとか、店主のせいだとか。しかし、これも大数の法則に過ぎない。その店で買ったから当選したのではなく、当選した人がその店でチケットを買った可能性が高いだけなのです。より多くの当選チケットを売っていることで有名な店があれば、そこにチケットを買いに行く人が増えます。そうすると、より多くの当選者がその店でチケットを買った可能性が高くなります。どこでチケットを買っても、当選する確率は同じです。

              こんな例を考えてみましょう。フロリダのディズニーランドの有名な写真があります。そこには2人の子供が写っています。では、何が特別なのでしょうか？その二人の子供は、その時はお互いを知らないのですが、14年後には結婚します。結婚した後、子供の頃の写真を見ていたら、この写真を見つけたそうです。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

　　　　　確率はどれくらいですか？100万分の1？1億分の1？すごいじゃないですか。そうですね。でも、数字の大きさを考えれば、驚くことではありません。1980年以降、ディズニーランドには年間平均1,500万人の人々が訪れています。6億1,500万人ですよ。同じ写真に写る人が2人必要なので、3億人としましょう。1億分の1の確率？ならば、3組のカップルが、出会う前の子供の頃の写真を持っていればいい。しかし、考えなければならないのはそれだけではありません。確率を高くするものがあります。I）子どもたちは学校に行かなければならないので、学校が休みの日にディズニーランドに行くのが普通です。つまり、2人の子供が同時にいる可能性が高くなります。II) 子供のいる人は、子供のいない人よりも、より多くの写真を撮ります。III)人々は、行ったときに複数の写真を撮る。写真が多ければ多いほど、2人の子供が同じ写真に写っている可能性が高くなります。IV)夫婦はお互いの子供時代の写真を見る傾向がある。これらのことを考えると、このようなことが起こらない方がおかしいですよね。

              私が大数の法則を好きなのは、そこにあります。どんなに確率の高いことでも、たくさんの人がいれば、必ず起こります。100億分の1の確率で何かが起こる？この2,000年の間に1,000億人の人々がこの地球上で暮らしてきたのですから、10回は起こっているはずです。これはすごいことですよね。 

 

People have a really hard time understanding the law of large numbers. As the number of actions gets larger and larger, the probability of something happening also gets larger and larger. Say, for example, the probability of winning the lottery. In Japan, it is 1:13,983,816. Every week about 30 million people buy a ticket, so you would expect about two or three people to win. Which is what usually happens. We misunderstand this because we think of the probability that “we” will win, not that “somebody” will win.

              Some lottery booths become famous for selling a large number of winning tickets. People put it down to the area, or a lucky cat, or the owner of the shop. But, it is just the law of large numbers again. People don’t win because they bought their ticket at that particular shop, there is just a higher chance that someone who wins will have bought their ticket at that shop. If a place is famous for selling more winning tickets, more people will go there to buy tickets. That increases the chance that more people that win will have bought their ticket there. You have just as much chance of winning, no matter where you buy your ticket.

              Think about this example. There is a famous photo of Disneyland, Florida. In it are two children. So, what is special? Those two children don’t know each other at the time, but 14 years later, they will get married. After they were married, they were looking at childhood photos and they found this photo. What is the chance? 1 in a million? 1 in a hundred million? Isn’t that amazing! Yes. But it shouldn’t be surprising, if you think about the large numbers. Since 1980, the Disneyland has attracted an average of 15 million people a year. That’s 615 million people. We need two people to be in the same photo, so let’s say 300 million people. A one in a hundred million chance? Then three couples should have photos that show them as children before they met. But that’s not all we need to think about. There are things that make the probability higher. I) Children have to go to school, which means they usually visit Disneyland during the school holidays. That means the chance of two children being there at the same time is higher. II) People with children take more photos than people without children. III)People take more than one photo when they go. The more photos, the greater the chance that two children will be in the same picture. IV)Married couples tend to look at each other’s childhood photos. So, if you think about all of these things, it would be stranger if something like this didn’t happen.

              And that’s what I love about the law of large numbers. No matter how high the probability of something happening, if there are enough people, it will happen. Something has a 1 in 10 billion chance of happening? 100 billion people have lived on this planet in the last 2,000 years so it should have happened 10 times! Isn’t that amazing!
