幼い頃から、私は世界中を旅したいと夢見ていました。外国語のフレーズを覚えようとし、異文化への知識を貪欲に求めていたのです。何を探していたのか、あるいは何から逃れようとしていたのかはわかりませんが、いつも自分とは異なる人々に強く惹かれていました。 

高校三年の時、私たちの学校に長崎から一人の日本人交換留学生がやって来ました。もちろん、私はすぐに日本語を話してみたいという気持ちでいっぱいになり、日本語の会話集から「おはようございます」と「これは鉛筆です」という二つのフレーズを覚えました。 

ある朝、私は彼のところへまっすぐ歩み寄り、思わず声をかけました。 
「おはようございます。これは鉛筆です！」 
その時、手には鉛筆すら持っていなかったのです。 

私の言葉を聞いた彼の反応は、私の人生を大きく変えました。誰かがわざわざ日本語を覚えてくれたことを、彼は大喜びしたのです。彼は私をとても褒めてくれたので、私はすぐに「もっと勉強しなければ。日本に行きたい」と強く思いました。 

私が大学を選んだのは、日本への交換留学プログラムがあったからです。卒業後すぐに、私は日本に渡りました。そこでの経験、学んだ言語、そして出会った友人たちとのつながり――それらすべては、あの日、外国語で意思疎通し、理解される喜びを初めて味わった瞬間から始まったのです。 

言語教師として、私は外国語学習の数え切れないほどの利点を知りました。より多くの就職機会やより良い給与につながることもありますし、脳を強く柔軟に保ち、母語への理解を深めることさえあります。 
しかし私にとって、それらは他言語を学ぶ本当の理由には及びません。異文化への扉が開かれるあの瞬間こそ、想像しうる最高の体験の一つなのです。相手の母国語で話しかけて驚かせた時に浮かぶ笑顔――それが何よりの喜びです。 

翻訳ソフトには常にわずかな時間差があり、翻訳の過程で失われるものもあります。けれども、誰かがあなたの言語と文化を真に理解しようと時間をかけてくれる時、そこには本物の人間的なつながりが生まれます。そして、一つの言語と文化に自らを限定する人には決して得られない、ある種の愛を心から感じられるのです。 

2026年はもうすぐそこまで来ています。新たな気持ちで、新しい言語のフレーズをいくつか学んでみませんか。真剣に取り組めば、必ずその努力は報われると、私は自信をもって約束します。 

I’ve known from a young age that I wanted to travel around the world. I tried to learn phrases in other languages, and I was eager to learn about other cultures. I don’t know what I was looking for, or what I was running from, but I was always drawn to people different from myself.  

In my third year of high school, our school hosted a single Japanese exchange student from Nagasaki. Of course, I immediately wanted to try my hand at speaking Japanese. I learned two phrases from a Japanese phrasebook: “おはようございます。” and “これは鉛筆です。”  

One morning, I marched right up to him and blurted out, “おはようございます。これは鉛筆です！”　I didn’t even have a pencil with me. His reaction altered the course of my entire life. He was overjoyed that someone had taken the time to learn some Japanese. He complimented me so much, that I immediately thought, “I need to learn more. I want to visit Japan.”  

I chose my university because they offered exchanges to Japan. As soon as I graduated, I moved here. The amazing experiences I’ve had, and the friends I’ve made are all thanks to that one day, when I experienced the joy of communicating in a foreign language, and being understood. 

As a language teacher, I’ve learned all about the benefits of learning another language. It can lead to more job opportunities or a better salary. It keeps your brain stronger and more flexible. It can even improve your understanding of your native language. To me, those reasons are not nearly as powerful as my main reason to learn other languages. The wonderful feeling of opening a door to another culture is one of the best I can imagine. The look of happiness when you surprise someone by speaking their native language is a treat. With translation software, there is always a time lag, and some things get lost in translation. When someone takes the time to truly understand your language and culture, a genuine human connection is made, and you can truly feel a kind of love that isn’t available to people who limit themselves to one language and culture.  

2026 is rapidly approaching. Why not take this year to learn some phrases in a new language? I promise that if you make a sincere effort, it will pay off one day!
