アメリカに留学中の益子珠里さんから第2回目の留学報告が届きました。

こんにちは。アメリカのモンタナ州ユリーカに留学中の益子珠里です。みなさんはいかがお過ごしでしょうか？私は元気ですが、毎日とても忙しく、大変な日々を送っています。留学生活が始まってから約3ヶ月が経ちました。3ヶ月経ったのにもかかわらず英語力の向上が全く感じられず、焦っています。私は学校の授業を受ける前からバレーボールの練習をしに学校に行っていたのですぐに友達はできました。ですが最初は英語を聞き取ることだけで精一杯でした。今はだいぶ英語を聞き取れるようになりましたが、まだ自分からほとんど話しかけることができていません。私にはスペイン、フィリピン、スウェーデン、フランス人の友達がいるのですが、その友達には自分から話しかけることができます。これは私と同じ立場で英語を第二言語とする友達なので、下手な英語でも、多少の間違いがあっても恥ずかしさはほとんどないからできることです。もちろん私は日本語と多少の英語しか話せないので様々な国の友達と世界共通語の英語を使って話すことは英会話の練習になっていますが、英語を第一言語としない私たちは今の時点では完璧な英語は話せませないのでこのまま英語を第一言語としない友達とばかり話していると少し変わった英語が身についてしまうと思いました。ですので、気持ちを切り替えてそして恥ずかしさを捨てて自分から積極的に話しかけます。前文の通り私はバレーボール部に所属していて、日曜日以外毎日練習がありました。また、毎週土曜日は試合があって私の学校から二時間ほど離れた学校に試合をしに行ったり、学校の授業を受けずに試合をしに行ったりもしました。アメリカのバレーボールと日本のバレーボールではルールも少し違って、何よりも上下関係が全くないのでとてもやりにくと感じました。アメリカで3ヶ月ほどバレーボールをやってみて私には日本のように上下関係がしっかりあって目上の先生方などに対して使う『敬語』がある日本が向いていると改めて実感しました。ですが、バレーボール部のコーチの方々や友達はとても素敵で短い期間でしたがここユリーカでバレーボールができてとても楽しかったですし、とても良い経験になりました。これからの課題はもっと会話をすることなのでこの目標を意識して生活します。読んでくださった方ありがとうございました。

Hello. I am Juri Masuko　from Eureka, Montana. How are you guys doing? I am good but  I am sending busy and really crazy day. About 3 months have passed since I came here however, I have not felt any improvement in my English ability at all, so I am impatient. I went to school to practice volleyball before I took classes at school, so I made friends at once. Right now I can catch English more, but I have not been able to talk to them much from myself yet. I have friends who are Spain, Philippines, Sweden and French, but I can talk to them from myself. Because this is a friend with English as the second language in the same position as myself, even in poor English, even if there are some mistakes, it is possible to do because there is no embarrassment. Of course I can only speak Japanese and some English, so speaking with friends from different countries using English in a common language is a practice for English conversation, but we do not use English as the first language As I could not speak perfect English at that point I thought that if I just talked with friends who do not make English the first language, I think my English will be a little strange. So change the feelings and abandon shyness and actively talk to everyone from myself. I played volleyball in the USA for about three months and I realized that Japan has a “honorific language” suitable for overseas teachers who have strong relationships like Japan, like Japan. Although the coaches and friends of the volleyball club were very nice and short periods, it was a lot of fun making volleyball at Eureka here and it was a very good experience. The future task is to talk more, so I will consciously live with this goal.　Thank you for reading my report.
