カナダのアルバータ州、ＨＪコーディー高校に留学中の植田小里加さんから第２回目の留学報告が届きました。

 

皆さん、お元気ですか。私はとても元気です！札幌は10月に雪が降ったそうですね。シルバン・レイクは今日（11月11日）初雪が降りました。いよいよ冬の到来です！お体に気を付けてくださいね。ということで、私は第1回目の報告以来、本当にたくさんのことを経験しました。ですから、この報告は第1回目よりも長くなります。でもそれは、私がカナダでの生活を楽しんでいる証拠ですから、皆さんに読んでもらえると嬉しいです。

 

8月は（前回の報告に書けばよかったのですが）、私はホストファミリーと一緒にバンフに行きました。ここに行く話を聞いたときは驚きました。なぜなら私は、カナダにいる間にバンフに行けるとは思っていなかったからです。びっくりしたのは、バンフには旅行客ばかりでなく、店員さんにも日本人が多かったことです。実際、日本の女性が経営しているお店にも行きました。それに日本円が使えるお店もいくつかあったんですよ！日本語で「日本人がやっているお店ですので、日本円が使えます。」と掲示してあるんです。「レインボー」という名前のアイスと、ワニ肉を食べました！！アイスは一つのアイスで色んな味が楽しめるので、優柔不断な私にとってはとても良かったです(笑)。とても美味しくて、チョコチップも入っていたので大満足でした。ワニ肉は…皆さんは食べたことがありかすか？鶏肉みたいなのですが、鶏肉よりも歯ごたえがあって美味しかったです！！

 

9月は、ホストファミリーとホストシスターの友達の家族とエドモントン・アニメ・エンターテインメント・エクスポに行きました。私たちも含めて、コスプレをしたアニメファンが本当にたくさんいました。ピカチューやカードキャプター・さくらなどの日本のアニメのコスプレをした人たちもいました。アニメ関連のグッズやコミックばかりでなく、服やアクセサリーもありましたよ。シルバンへの帰り道、皆でベトナム料理を食べました。フロアスタッフがちょっと訛りのある英語だったので、お互いを理解するのに時間がかかりましたが。

 

学校ではテリー・フォックス・マラソンがありました。テリー・フォックスさんをご存知ですか。彼は「希望のマラソン」をしたヒーローです。詳しくはグーグルしてください。（英語では、インターネット検索をするときにグーグルを動詞として使うようです。ちなみに、誰かとスカイプで話をするときはスカイピングという単語を使います。ちょっと最近覚えた言葉を使ってみました(笑)。）それで、テリー・フォックス・マラソンで、私たちは学校の近所を歩きました。先生たちが80年代をイメージした服を着ているのを見て面白かったです。想像してみて下さい、先生が変わった服装をして授業をするんですよ。面白いと思いませんか。私は同じような光景をハロウィーンでも見ました。

 

10月は、感謝祭、選挙、バック・トゥー・ザ・フューチャーの日、それにハロウィーンがありました！！感謝祭では、七面鳥、かぼちゃパイ、じゃがいもなどたくさんの料理を食べました。カナダの友達が、「感謝祭には美味しい料理がたくさんあるから、覚悟しておいた方がいいわよ」と言っていましたが、これは貴重なアドバイスでした。ですから、現在4年生の長期留学を目指している皆さんは、たくさん食べる準備をしていった方がいいですよ！！それから、皆さんの多くが「何、選挙？」と思っているかもしれませんが、カナダの人々にとっては大きな行事のようでした。というのもこの選挙でカナダの首相が変わったからです。カナダでは、本物の選挙のように、学生選挙が学校で行われました。選挙結果が、本物の選挙と同じ日付と時間に発表されるんですよ。それから、カナダの政治家の中には英語とフランス語の2か国語が話せる人もいます。これら2つの行事には驚きました。それから、皆さんは「バック・トゥー・ザ・フューチャー」という映画はご存知ですか？そしてその映画の中で、映画の主人公のマーティーとドックがタイムマシーンに乗って2015年の10月21日にやってきたのを知っていますか？それで、その週末に「バック・トゥー・ザ・フューチャーの全シリーズを皆で見ました。本当に楽しかったです！皆さんも是非見てください！それから、ハロウィーンでは、私は魔女になってトリック・オア・トリートをしました。たくさんお菓子を貰いましたよ。皆と分けても、日本に帰るまでに全部食べられるかどうか分かりません(笑)。ところで、カナダにはハロウィーンのグッズだけを売っているお店があるんです。カナダの人たちはハロウィーンが大好きなんだなと思いました。皆さんも、カナダに来れば分かりますよ。

 

私の通っている学校の行事も充実しています！！インターアクト・クラブでは、「ウィ・デイ」という、世の中を変えるためのイベントでラフィキ（スワヒリ語で友達という意味です）というものを買いました。それはケニアの女性が作っていて、それを買うことで彼女たちを援助することが出来るんです。クワイアでは、「追悼の日」のセレモニーで歌いましたが、これからもいくつかのイベントで歌う予定です。5月にはオタワに行くかもしれません。今からとても楽しみにしています！それから、私は学校の演劇で役をもらったので、演劇コンクールに参加します！！13個の役しかなかったので、当たって砕けろの精神でオーディションを受けましたが、私はその中で唯一の日本人でした。でもホストファミリーが手伝ってくれたおかげで、第一次オーディションでは最善を尽くしてディレクターの方たちを沸かせました。第二次オーディションはセリフ読みだったので、あまり上手く行かなかったのですが、ディレクターの方たちが私の努力を認めてくれて（ホストシスターが言っていました）役をくれました！！オーディションに合格したと聞いた時は、にわかには信じられませんでした。とにかくこの演劇が楽しみです！！

 

これは私の個人的なことですが、11月10日は私の誕生日で、ホストファミリーが誕生日パーティーを開いてくれました。私の食べたかったカップケーキを食べたり、帽子や（ひとつは魚のような形をしているのですが、それをハロウィーンショップで見つけて欲しくて、でもあとでもう一度行ったときは売り切れてなかったんです。ハロウィーンのあとで、ホストマザーが見つけてくれたんです！）手袋やお菓子をプレゼントしてくれました！！冬になったら身につけようと思います！

 

それから、フランス出身の子と友達になってお互いの文化を紹介したり、ボランティア活動に参加したり、他の日本人留学生と日本文化を紹介したり、ホストファミリーとボーリング行ったりしました。楽しく毎日を過ごしています。4年生の長期留学希望の皆さんはもうエルティスが終わったでしょうね。5年生の皆さんは短期留学が終わって英語劇に向けて準備していることと思います。6年生は入試の準備の真最中でしょう。皆さんの幸運をお祈りしています。

Hey, how are you doing?  I’m really fine!!  I heard Sapporo had snow in October… Sylvan Lake have first snow today　（November 11th）!!  Yeah, winter comes!!  Please take care!  Anyway, I experienced sooooooooo many things since I sent first report, so this one gonna be longer than previous one.  This is an evidence I enjoy life in Canada, so I’m glad if you read it. 

 

    In August, (Actually I couldn’t write about it in previous report.) I went to Banff with my host family.  I was surprised to hear to go to Banff because I didn’t think I can go to there while I’m in Canada.  Surprisingly, there are so many Japanese in Banff not only tourists but also clerks.  In fact, I went to a shop which ran by Japanese woman.  In addition, we can use Japanese yen in some shops!  There are signs that are written “The shop ran by Japanese.  You can use Japanese yen” in Japanese.  I ate an ice cream which is named “rainbow” and alligator meat!!  That ice cream had some flavors in one ice cream so it was really good for me because I’m indecisive, lol.  It made me satisfactory because of the taste and many chocolate chips.  Alligator…have you ever eaten alligators?  It was similar chicken but chewier than chicken and delicious!! 

 

    In September, I went to Edmonton Animation and Entertainment Expo with my host family and my host sister’s friend’s family.  There were so many animation fans with costumes include us.  I found some people from Japanese pop culture, like Pikachu, Hikyu!, Card Captor Sakura, Attack on Titan etc.… However, there were sold stuff not only related animation or comics but also clothes or accessories.  The way back to Sylvan, we had Vietnamese food.  The waitress spoken English with a little different accent which I speak, so we needed time to understand each other… 

 

    We had Terry Fox Run at school.  Do you know Terry Fox?  He is a hero who did “Marathon of Hope”…please google it about further information.  (In English, people seem to use “google” as verb when they search on Internet.  Incidentally, if you talk with someone on Skype, you can use the word “skyping”.  I just want to use my new word, haha.)  Anyway, in Terry Fox Run, we walked neighborhood of our school be related to his achievement, but that was fun for me to walk rather than to see teachers with clothes which imaged 80s.  My math teacher taught us with his 80s fashion.  Please imagine it, your teachers teach you with unusual clothes…it’s funny, isn’t it?  I saw this scene in Halloween, too. 

 

    In October, we had Thanksgiving, election, the day of “Back to the Future” and Halloween!!  In Thanksgiving, we had so many foods like turkey, pumpkin pies and potatoes.  One of my Canadian friend said “You should prepare for Thanksgiving because we will have so many delicious foods!!”, and it was really good advice.  Therefore, 4^th grader who will go the U.S. or Canada should prepare to eat so much!!  Haha.  I guess many people think “What? Election??” when you read my report, but I think it was a big event for Canadian people because their prime minister was changed in this election.  In Canada, Student Vote was hold at schools like real election and we can see result of it on the same date and time like real one.  Some of Canadian politicians can speak 2 languages, English and French.  Those 2 facts made me surprised.  Do you know the movie “Back to the Future” and October 21^st of 2015 was the day which Marty and Doc (Characters from the movie) came with their time machine DeLorean?!  Therefore, we watched the whole series of “Back to the future” the weekend of that week.  Those were REALLY exciting!!  You should watch them!  In Halloween, I became a witch and went to Trick or Treating.  I got soo much treats.  I’m not sure able to eat all of them until go back to Japan even if I share them with someone, lol.  By the way, there are shops which sell only Halloween stuff.  I felt that Canadian love Halloween, haha.  You’ll find it if you come here!

 

    My school activities are fulfilling, too!!  As Interact club, I went to We Day which is an event to change the world and bought a biathlete which is called “rafiki” (“Rafiki” means friends in Swahili.).  It is made by women in Kenya and we can support them to buy it.  As choir, we sung in Remembrance Day ceremony and we are going to sing in some events.  In addition, we may go to Ottawa in May!! I’m looking forward to this trip!  Furthermore, I got a role of school play and go to competitions!!  I challenged auditions in a die-but-never-surrender spirit because I heard there were not so many roles (only 13 roles!) and I was the only Japanese student in auditions.  However, thanks to my host family’s support, I did my best in first audition and I made directors laugh!!  The second one was reading and I couldn’t do well but directors recognized my effort (It was said by my host sister), then I got a role!!  I couldn’t believe it easily when I heard I got a role.  I’m soo excited about this play!!

 

    This is my private matter… November 10^th is my birthday.  My host family held birthday party.  We ate cupcakes which I wanted to eat and they gave me some gifts like hats (One of them looks like fish is I saw and wanted to buy at Halloween stuff shop, but I couldn’t find it next time when I visit there because it was sold out.  After Halloween, my host mother found it!), gloves and candies!!  I’m going to wear them in winter! 

 

    In addition, I made a friend who comes French and introduce culture each other, go to volunteering and introduce Japanese culture with other Japanese exchange student, and went to bowling with my host family and finished last, haha… I’m having good days.  I think 4^th graders in English course had ELTiS already, 5^th graders had school trip and preparing for English Play in next year.  And 6^th graders are preparing for entrance exam.  I wish you have good days.
