アメリカのアイオワ州、ポストビル・コミュニティ高校に留学中の萱場万由子さんから第２回目の留学報告が届きました。

 

こんにちは、万由子です。お元気ですか。私は元気です。レポートが遅れてしまってごめんなさい。でも遅れる理由を田邊先生に話して許可を貰っているので、大丈夫ですよね？これが私の2回目のレポートです。アメリカに来てから4ヵ月が経ちました。信じられません。時間が経つのはとても速いです。札幌では雪が降ったと聞きました。私の町では11月20日に初雪が降りましたが、もうすっかり溶けてしまって今は雪はありません。

 

今回はホームカミング、ハロウィーン、バスケットボールなどについてお話ししたいと思います。まず、ホームカミングについてです。これは学校祭のような行事ですが、授業は普通にあります。一週間の開催期間で、それぞれの曜日で着る服のテーマがあります。私たちの学校のテーマは曜日順に、パジャマ、スーパーヒーロー、世界中、ベストドレスアップ、フットボールジャージでした。私は浴衣と甚平をホストファミリーにプレゼントしたので、「世界中」の日は家族と一緒に浴衣を着ました。思った以上の人が浴衣に興味をもってくれたので、とても嬉しかったです。知らない人も、「その着物、素敵ね」と言ってくれました。着物じゃなくて浴衣なんですけどね。お昼時にホストファミリーと一緒に取った写真が私のお気に入りです。土曜日には、ホームカミングダンスがありました。その日はホストシスターにドレスを借りてきました。信じられますか。私がドレスを着たんですよ！その姿は見せられませんけどね。夜は、ダンスパーティーが始まる前にホストシスターと友達とで夕食を食べにレストランに行きました。私はダンスが嫌いなので退屈でしたけど。ちなみに、ホストシスターも退屈だったって言っていました。

 

次はハロウィーンのお話をします。ハロウィーンがアメリカでは一大行事だということは皆さんご存知だと思うのですが、私はパンプキン彫り以外は何もしませんでした。仮装もしませんでしたし、トリックオアトリートもしませんでしたが、ホストシスターと一緒にパンプキン彫りをしたので楽しかったです。

 

最後はバスケットのお話をします。11月にバスケットボールのシーズンが始まりました。私はこの季節が始まるのを楽しみにしていたのですが、楽しいことばかりではありません。チームには私も含めて選手が11人しかいなくて、私は日本では素晴らしいチームメイトとともにプレーしていたので…学校や友達や、何かが恋しいとか勉強のこととかで泣いたことはないのですが、バスケットのことでは2回泣きました。まだ始まって1ヵ月も経っていないのに…もうすでに11月14日と17日に練習試合がありました。最初の試合はまずまず活躍できました。私が3ポイントシュートを決めたときは、相手チームの選手が「ナイスショット」と言ってくれました。相手チームの選手から褒められると思わなかったので、ビックリしましたし嬉しかったです。でも2回目の試合はひどいプレーをしてしまったので、ホストファミリーに気づかれないように、家に帰ってからひそかに泣きました。とにかく、今回の留学報告でバスケットボールの試合について書きたかったので、報告を提出するのが遅れたのですが、最初の試合は悪天候のために延期になり、予定されていた次の日に試合が行われました。私はその日、本当に緊張していて（実際は2日前から緊張していたのですが）、それが理由かどうかは分かりませんが、イージーミスをたくさんしてしまいました。それでも3ポイントシュートを4回、2ポイントシュートを2回、それとフリースローで、トータルで19ポイントを挙げることができました。次の日、皆から「昨日はお疲れ様」とか「昨日は凄かったね」とか言われて本当に嬉しかったです。特に「マユコはボーラ―だね」と言われた時が一番うれしかったです。アメリカでは、シュートが得意な人のことを「ボーラ―」って言うんですよ。バスケットボールでは辛いことがたくさんありますが、全力でプレーしてチームの勝利に貢献したいと思っています。

 

ちょっと話題を変えて、私にはお気に入りの時間があって、それはホストシスターと映画を見ることです。彼女は映画を見るのが好きなので、私も一緒に見て大声で笑ったりしています。私はまだ英語がそんなに上手には話せないのですが、それでも彼女にはなるべく話すように心がけていて、大学のことやバスケットボールのこと、お互いの第一印象や日本のことなどを話しています。とても楽しい時間です。ホストシスターは色んなことを知っていて、私によく教えてくれます。例えば、新鮮なにんじんをかんだ時の歯ごたえと指をかんだ時の歯ごたえは同じだとか、ハエが何かに止まるときは必ずおならをするとか。彼女ってとても賢いと思います。

 

日本に帰るまであと5ヵ月しかありません。心配しかありませんが、もうやるしかないし、現実から逃れることはできません。日本のバスケットボール部のメンバーは一生懸命に練習したり試合を戦ったりしているので、私も彼らに負けないくらい一生懸命に練習して、試合を戦って、勉強も一生懸命にしたいと思います。次の報告も良い報告が書けるようにベストを尽くします。読んでいただいてありがとうございました。また次回の報告でお会いしましょう。

Hi it’s Mayuko. How’s it going? I’m good. I’m sorry about be late to send report but I have reason that I was late to send report and I got permission from Mr. Tanabe properly, so It will be fine right? This is my second report. It has been 4 months since I came to America. I can’t believe it. It’s too fast to pass the time. I heard it was snow in Sapporo. It was first snow day on November 20th in my town, but it melted so there is no snow.

 

This time I want to write about Homecoming, Halloween, and basketball, and so on in this report. First, I’m gonna write about Homecoming. It’s like school festival, but we have class normally. We hold it for a week, and then there is a theme of clothes in a week. The themes of our school are Pajamas, Super hero, All around the world, Best dress up, and Football jersey in order of day. I gave Yukata and Zinbei to my family so I wore “Yukata” with my family on a day of All around the world. A lot of people that more than I was thinking are interested in Yukata so I was very happy. One girl who is not known by me told “I like your Kimono” to me. It is Yukata, not Kimono haha. At the lunch time we took a family picture. It’s one of my favorite picture. We had a Homecoming dance on Saturday. I borrowed homecoming dress from my sister and I wore it. Can you believe? “I” wore “dress”. I will never show the figure. At night I went to restaurant to eat supper with my friends and my sister before start the dance party. I don’t like to dance so heinously, it was boring for me. Incidentally, my sister said it was boring too. 

 

Next, I’m gonna talk about Halloween. I think everyone have heard Halloween is grand event in America, but I didn’t do anything except carving pumpkin. I didn’t dress in Halloween costume. We didn’t not only dress in halloween costume but trick or treat, but I had a great time, because I could pumpkin carving with my best sister.

 

Finally, I’m gonna write about basketball. It has come basketball season November. I was really looking forward to come basketball season, but there are not just fun things. My teammates are only 11 people include me and I had been playing great teammates in Japan so… you know? I don’t cry about school or friends or missing something or study, but I already got tears 2 times about basketball it had not been 1 month yet. I already had 2 practice games on November 14 and 17. The first game I was pretty good. When I made 3 points the opposing team’s player said me “good shoot” I didn’t think I was said something by opposing team so I was really surprised but I was happy, but second one I was terrible, so when I got home I secretly cried without making it known to my host family, so they don’t know I was crying. Anyway, I had a decent game too. I want to write about first game so I was late to turn in report. However, my first game was canceled, because the weather was problem… but I couldn’t understand, because I am a “Dosanko”. So my first game was next day of the game that was canceled. I was really nervous the day. (actually I was nervous from 2 days ago of the game day) I don’t know being nervous was a reason but I missed easy shoot a lot, but I made four 3 points, three 2 points, and free through, so total I made 19 points at the first game and that was team top. The next day of the game some people told me “good job last night” “ you were good last night”. I was really happy that I was told like that especially I was really happy that I was told “Mayuko is baller”. Many people told me “Mayuko is baller”. American called the people who can good at shoot. I have a lot of hard things about basketball (not just basketball), but I will play hard as much as possible and I want to contribute to the team’s victory.

 

Just to change the subject I have favorite times that are to watch movies with my best sister, and basketball game. She likes to watch movies so I usually watch movies with her and we laugh together with big voice. And I can’t speak English well yet, but I can try to talk English to my sister, so we talked about college, basketball, first impression of each other, and Japan. It was really good time. My sister knows a lot of things so she always teach me. For example, it’s same chewy that to bite fresh carrot and to bite finger. When the fly land they are always pooping. I think she is really smart.

 

I have only about 5 months until go back to Japan. I have only worry, but my way is only just do it. I can’t escape reality. My Japanese basketball teammates are playing or working hard so I want to working, playing, and studying hard with them. I will be best to be able to good report by next report.
