アメリカのミシガン州、ケント・シティ高校に留学中の岩上莉子さんから、第２回目の留学報告が届きました。

 

こんにちは、岩上莉子です。皆さんお元気ですか。私は毎日元気でやっています。もう4ヶ月ほど経っていることが信じられません。時間が本当に早く感じます。

 

学校での生活は充実しています。なぜなら、友達と会えて話せるからです。それが私の1日の糧となっています。そう思える私は幸せだと思います。どんなに授業が難しくても、朝学校に来て友達と話すと元気が出てよし今日も頑張ろうという気持ちになります。ランチの時間は、今日の良かったこととか、楽しかったこと、失敗したこと、疲れたこと、など、色々話を聞いてくれる友達がいて、とても安心します。ランチの後の授業は、音楽と英語なので、午前の授業に比べると楽です。英語は大変な時もあるけれど、先生がとてもおもしろくて、わからないことがあると助けてくれます。そして、いつも私にジョークを言ってきます。そのジョークを返せるようにもなったんですよ！

 

授業では文法をやったり、課題図書を進めたり、毎週金曜日には単語のテスト、そしてarticle of weekといって、ニュース番組の記事を読んでエッセイを書くというのがあります。私にとっては週末課題みたいなものになっています。授業の一部に、book talkというのがあって、1人につき4分間、読んだ本を紹介するというのがあります。はっきり言って私はこれが1番嫌いです。だけど自分の努力次第で良くも悪くもなることはわかっているので、もっともっと頑張ります。先生が色々アドバイスをしてくれたり、コメントをつけて返してくれたりするので、先生をびっくりさせられるように頑張ります！

 

学校の友達や先生と日常会話をするまでは成長していると思います。内容にもよりますが、facebookやInstagramを利用していると友達ができやすいとおもいます。なぜなら、色々な情報を共有できて、学校での話題にもなって、何かと便利だからです。アメリカの高校はフレッシュマン、ソフモア、ジュニア、シニアと4つに分かれていて、私はジュニアです。私のホストシスターがシニアで、とても助かっています。勉強のことなど、沢山教えてもらいました。そのおかげで、シニアの友達もできました！

 

日々の授業で思うことは、アメリカ人の高校生についていくのはやっぱりとても大変です。何しろ授業の資料やプリントなどを半端なく出してくるのに、みんなスラスラ〜っと片づけてしまいます。それから授業の進み具合がとてつもなく早いです。特に政治の授業がそんな感じです。私は1番苦手で、正直言ってうまくついていけていません。政治の先生に相談したら、”I’ll support you as I can.”と言ってくれました。だから放課後に、わかりやすく説明してくれたり、プリントにまとめてくれたりと、本当に助かっています。政治の先生もとてもおもしろくて楽しい先生です。

 

この前急に、ホストシスターが、急に”Riko! We’re gonna go to the Florida in Spring break!!”と言ってきて、びっくりしました。春休みにホストファミリーと一緒にフロリダに旅行に行くことになって、今からとても楽しみです！ファミリーと過ごす時間は本当に楽しくて、いつも笑わせてくれます。それに春には陸上が始まって、クロスカントリーのメンバーともまた走れるのでとても楽しみです。

 

私の今の目標は、辞書なしで、授業についていくことです。私にとっては難しいことですが、目標があると頑張れるので、私は目標達成のために頑張ります。寮生ということもあり、色々な人に支えられて今の自分があることをここに来て改めて感じました。

Hello, everyone! I’m Riko. How are you doing? I’m doing fine every day. I can’t believe over four months already passed since I came here. I feel time fries really fast!

 

My school life is going fun every day! Because I can see my friends and talk to them. That gives me power before starting class. Though classes are so difficult, they makes me have confidence and try the new day again! Especially lunch time is my break time for me. They always hear about my today’s good news, fun things, or bad thing. So I’m so glad to have such friends. After lunch time, I have music class and English, so it’s kind of fun! Sometimes English class is hard, but my English teacher is quite fun teacher. He helps me when I don’t know. And he always says to me jokes. I’ve grown I can return his jokes!

 

In his class, we’re doing grammar and reading. And also we take vocabulary tests every Friday. For writing, we read article of week’s topic, and write essay about it. It’s kind of homework for weekend. There is a book talk in part of English class. I have to talk and introduce the book that I’ve read for four minutes. I don’t like book talk. But I’m really sure it depends on my efforts. So I’ll keep practicing and return teacher’s expectations!

 

And I think I’ve grown I can talk to friends or teachers daily conversation even though it depends on conclusion. But I’ll recommend that using SNS such as Facebook or Instagram. Because it’s gonna be used for making friends or topics at school and  then we can share many informations. 

 

American high school is separated grade for freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior. Actually, I’m junior. And my sister is a senior. She taught me a lot of studying. Thanks for her, I made senior friends! 

 

I always think studying with American high school students is so hard before as I know. Though there are many many paper work, most students can finish up so early. And the process of continuing class is so fast. The government class is like that. When I asked teacher, he said “I’ll support you as I can”. So I’m always helped by him a lot. He is also fun teacher and unique. 

 

A week ago, my host sister suddenly said to me “Riko! We’re gonna go to the Florida in Spring break!”. I was so surprised about that. Because my host family kept me secret! And I love to spend time with host family. I’m so looking forward to going to go to the Florida. In Spring, track is gonna start! I’m gonna be able to run XC teammates together again! That makes me so exciting! 

 

My objection is studying without dictionary in daily classes. I’m sure it’s gonna be hard challenge for me, but I’ll try to accomplish my objection! Actually I lived in dorms, and I’ve been feeling I am supported many people.
