アメリカのアイオワ州、バレー高校に留学中の板本遥南さんから第２回目の留学報告が届きました。

 

こんにちは、ハルです！もうすぐクリスマス…そして今年も残りわずかだなんて信じられません！

 

私がステイしているアイオワ州に住んでいる人たちは想像以上にフレンドリーです。ホストシスターとフットボールの試合を観に行った時の事ですが…試合中はほぼ立ちっぱなしだったので、休憩時間になりやっと座れると思ったら席がなく、シスターとどうしようかと相談していたら「ここ座っていいよ！」と後ろから声を掛けられました。振り返ると、その子が差していたのはなんとその子の膝の上！！(笑) 私はその子を知らなかったし、もちろんその子も私の事を知らなかったので驚きました。まぁ最終的には座ったんですけどね(笑) 次に試合を観に行った時にも同じ事がありました(笑) こっちの人にとって知らない人と話すのは、ごく普通の事らしく…初対面でもそうと感じさせないナチュラルさがあります。今までに何度”シスターの友達なんだぁ”と思ったかわかりません。実際は、大抵初めて会った人なんですけどね(笑)

 

話を変えて…今の所、私の１番好きだった休日はThanksgiving dayです。友達や家族などと色々な事に感謝し、それを共有する日です。それってとても素敵な事だと思いませんか？私はこの日、ホストファミリーと沢山の”感謝”を共有しました。その後はマッシュポテトやターキーなどのご馳走を、とにかく食べまくりました！食べる事もこのThanksgiving dayの一環のようです。「Thanksgiving dayって何するの？」と友達に聞いたら、「とにかく食べる！！」という答えが全員から返ってくる程(笑) 沢山のご馳走が出て、そのどれもが美味しかったです！写真撮影をして、遊んで、話して…凄く楽しかったです:)

 

ところで…私は少し前からJazz Bandに参加しているのですが、他のメンバーより遅く始めたため友達が中々できなくて…孤独感で泣きそうになる事が何度も。どんなに辛くても周りの人(特にホストファミリー)に迷惑や心配をかけたくないと、自分の中にその思いを必死に抑え込んでいました。正直、弱音を吐いたら負けだという思いもありました(笑) でもこの前は、気付いたらホストマザーに連絡していました。「今行くね」とすぐにマザーが返信をくれて…待っている間に、マザーから事情を聞いたシスターから電話がきて、マザーとファザーが来るまで喋っていてくれました。シスターの声を聞いた時、安心して泣いてしまいました。…今日はごめんねとその日の夜謝った時、ファミリーは優しい笑顔で「そのために私たちがいるんだよ」と言ってくれました。本当に嬉しかったです。また泣きそうになりました…”悲しさ”ではなく”嬉しさ”で。今の私にとってホストファミリーは、もう大切な”家族”です。私はファミリーがくれたこの素敵な言葉を一生忘れません。

 

そんな私のホストファミリーは、２番目のシスターが留学しているロンドンに行きます。私がこの家に移る前に決まっていたので、私はここでお留守番。クリスマスと年越しは別々に過ごします。約10日間ですが自分でも驚く程寂しいです。ファミリーがいない間は３家族にお世話になることになっています。ヤドカリ生活…(笑) 緊張もありますが凄く楽しみです！！

 

では、素敵なクリスマス＆お正月を！2016年も掛け替えのない年になりますように。

 

 

 

Hi guys, how’s it going? I can’t believe that Christmas is coming soon, and It’s almost the end of year!!

 

People who live in Iowa are so friendly more than you think. I went to the football game with my host sister. We stood whole time during the game expect for a recess. We wanted to sit during the recess, but we lost our seats. What if you did? “You guys can sit here!” a girl said to us, so we turned around. She pointed her lap!! I was surprised because I didn’t know who she was and of course, she didn’t know me! After all, I sat on her lap though. Can you do that? When I went to the football game again, the same thing happened to us. Even though they don’t know each other, people chat with strangers. It’s a normal thing to them. They talk so naturally. I don’t know how many times that I thought they are friends. Now, you know how friendly they are!:)

 

My most favorite holiday so far is a Thanksgiving day. It’s a day of giving thanks to friends and families. I think it’s a great thing, isn’t it? I had a good time with my family. We were thankful for many things and ate a lot of food such as mash potatoes and turkey. The food was delicious! Then we took pictures, played games, and talked a lot!!

 

How can I tell you how wonderful my host family is! When I started to participate in the Jazz Band, I didn’t have any friends because I joined later than the other members. I felt lonely and I almost cried. Then I found myself texting mom, my host mother. “I’m coming”, she said. When I was waiting for my host parents, my host sister called me. She heard my story from mom. She kept talking to me until mom and dad came. I eventually cried because her voice gave me comfort. I apologized about it at that night. They smiled and gave me sweet words, “That’s why we’re here.”

Can you imagine how happy I was? I was gonna cry again. That’s not because I was sad this time. I felt like I’m a TRUE family. I’ll never forget those words.

 

My host family will go to London to meet my another host sister, so I can’t spend time with them at Christmas and New Year’s Eve. I’ll stay with three different families. I’m sure I’m gonna miss “my family” in Iowa. I’m nervous, but I’m also excited about that!!
