カナダのアルバータ州、ＨＪコーディー高校に留学中の植田小里加さんから第４回目の留学報告が届きました。

 

Sylvan Lakeよりこんにちは!!　お元気ですか?　私はとっても元気です。さて、色々なことが怒涛の如く起きています!!　忙しい、けど楽しいです!!　皆さんに伝えたいことがたくさんあります。

 

まずはじめに、1月と2月のほぼすべての週末はスキーに行っていました!!　スキーの冬!!　ホストファザーがボランティアのスキーパトローラーなので、ホストファミリーとともに、連れて行ってくれたんです。この冬のおかげで、私のスキー技術は上がったと思います。あ、ところで、Tバーリフトって使ったことありますか?　私は一度もなかったので、これが人生初Tバーリフト…　結論から言って、私はチェアリフトの方が好きです。Tバーリフトはチェアリフトの様に高いところにはいかないけれど、バーを握るのにものすごく強く握らないといけないので (…私だけ?)。うーん、たぶん楽したいんでしょうね　笑

 

前のレポートに、「そして試験がやってくる…」と書いたのでそのことについて書こうと思います。私はBio20 (生物)、Mathematics20-1 (数学)、English Language Arts（ELA、英語）10-1の3科目の試験を受けました。大変ではありましたが、先生方にたくさん質問をして話す機会があったので良かったと思います!　さて、すべての試験は選択問題と筆記問題の2つで構成されています。特にELA (英語)では、Part A (エッセイライティング) とPart B（リーディング）の２パートがあります。携帯電話やタブレットの持ち込みは禁止ですが、辞書は電子辞書であっても持ち込めます。(留学先でテストを受けるときは先生に確認をとることをお勧めします!)　加えて、テストがある教室に飲食物を持ち込むこともできます。実際、たくさんの生徒が持ち込んでいました。しかもっ、Bio(生物)の試験では机の上に先生からのグミが置いてありました。あと、電卓と電子辞書用に、もしもの時のための電池をお忘れなきよう。(数学の先生が、試験中に電池が切れることもあるぞと言っていました。)

 

試験が終わったら、新学期のスタートです。今私はP.E.10、Social Studies 10-1、Art20,　そしてELA20-1を取っています。体育の授業では、色々な種類のスポーツをやっています。その中の1つがサスカチュワンベースボールです。サッカーのようなのですが、ベースボールと言われています。サスカチュワンと名前がついたものをよく聞きます、サスカチュワンベリーとか、サスカチュワンベースボールとか。アルバータサッカーとかないのかなぁと思います。ある日は、学校の近くの湖に行って、ブルームボールをやりました。アイスホッケーのようなのですが、使うのはボールです。すごく盛り上がりました!!　社会と英語は大変なのですが、友達や先生が助けてくれますし、授業テーマがものすごく興味深いので、頑張って授業についていこうと思います。英語の授業では、「言葉の力」に関するエッセイを書きました。「言霊」という言葉のある日本の人で良かったと思いました。言霊を題材にしたんです。社会の授業では、グローバライゼーションについて学んでいます。ある日、先生が授業中に私にジョークを言いました。私は、すべてのカナダ人の生徒がどう返すのか知っていたので、驚きました!　しかも、そのジョークにはちゃんとした名前があるんです!　びっくり!　授業を通して、世界の新しい側面を見ているような気がします。

 

One Act、学校の演劇のプロジェクトでは、ついに台詞をもらえました!　実は、他の役から「とって」きたんですけどね笑　それでもいいんです、幸せです。他にも、クルーの仕事ももらえました。In-house(内部公開)とzone(地区大会)が4月にあります。ある日、私が発音指導を受けるために教室に行ったのですが、先生はとても忙しかったので待たなければなりませんでした。が、劇のディレクターと役者の人がたまたまいて、私の発音を見てくれました。その役者の人は日本にいたことがあり、「この発音は日本語のこの発音と一緒だよ」と教えてくれて、とても分かりやすかったです。

 

おそらく、たくさんの「留学に行きたい」という人は、プロムとかグラッドにあこがれると思います。カナダにはグラッド、プロムとは違うのですが、きれいなドレスかスーツと、ガウンと帽子を身に着けて写真を取ります。大事なことは最初に、ドレス買いました!!　ホストファミリーとお店に行って、オレンジ、ピンク、グレーや紫のドレスを試着しました。本当に楽しい時間でした!　また、卒業写真も撮りました。日本のものと同様、イヤーブックやアルバム用に撮りますが、生徒は自分の好きなものと一緒に写真を撮ることができるのです。バスケットボールや楽器、はたまたペットまで!!　面白いですよね。

 

実は、時に日本に帰りたくないなあと思うときがあります。色々な人に、「日本が恋しい?」と聞かれるのですが、カナダの居心地もよくなっていたりします。日本にいるときと同じようにとはいきませんが、ここに来た時よりは、ぐんと、よくなったと思います。カナダでの残りの日々も、有意義に過ごそうと思います。

 

6年生の皆さん、ご卒業おめでとうございます!!　英語科のみんな、英語劇頑張ってね!!　では、次のレポートでお会いしましょう!!

 

追伸　劇と卒業式でつけるために、今日コンタクトを買いました。ホストファミリーに反対されるのを覚悟で言ったのですが、いざ言ってみたら賛成してくれて、眼科の予約を入れてくれました。言ってみるものですね。

 

Hello from Sylvan Lake!! How’s life going?  Mine is really good.  Well, many things happen like raging waves!!  Busy, but FUN!!  I have a lot of things to want to tell. 

 

First of all, I went to skiing in almost all weekend of January and February!! Skiing winter!!  My host father is a volunteer ski patroller, so he took his family and me there.  My skiing got better because of this winter.  Oh, by the way, have you ever used T-bar lift?  I had never seen and used it before so this was my first T-bar lift ever… as a result, I prefer to chair lift than T-bar lift.  It doesn’t go high altitude unlike chair lift, however, it needs to grab a bar with so much power (…just only me?).  Well, maybe I’m lazy, haha. 

 

 I wrote “And exam is coming…” in previous report, so gonna write about exam. I had three exams and which are Biology20, Mathematics20-1 and English Language Art (ELA) 10-1.  Those were tough but good for me because I asked a lot of questions for teachers and it was good opportunities to talk!  Anyway, all exams were multiple choices and numerical responses.  Especially in ELA, there are 2 parts and PartA is essay writing and PartB is reading comprehension.  We can’t bring any devices like phones or tablets, however, we can bring dictionaries even if it’s electric one (You should check your teacher about dictionaries when you have exams in other countries!).  In addition, students can bring food and drink to classroom during exam.  In fact, many students brought something to eat or drink.  And guess what?  In Bio exam, there were gummy candies which are from teachers on all desks.  Furthermore, don’t forget extra batteries for your dictionaries and calculator (My math teacher said that it may happen that the batteries die during the exam.). 

 

Then after the exam, the new semester started. Now, I’m taking P.E. 10, Social Studies10-1, Art20 and ELA20-1.  In Gym class, we’ve done some kinds of sports and one of them is Saskatchewan baseball.  It’s like soccer but it’s called baseball.  I’ve heard some things which have name “Saskatchewan” on them like Saskatchewan berry and Saskatchewan baseball.  I sometimes wonder are there anything like “Alberta soccer” or something like that.  Anyway, one day, we went down to the lake near the school and we did broomball.  It’s like ice hockey, but we use balls.  That was so exciting!!  I’m struggling with Social and English but friends and teachers help me and themes were REALLY interesting for me, so I’m trying catch up classes.  I’ve wrote an essay about “Power of Words” in English class.  I’ve appreciated that I’m Japanese since Japanese have a word kotodama which is the whole idea of my essay!  In Social class, we’re learning about Globalization and one day, my social teacher used joke for me in class.  That was so fun and I surprised that every Canadian students know how to reply the joke!!  Furthermore, that joke has particular name!  It’s interesting, isn’t it?  I feel like seeing new aspects of world in Social classes. 

 

In One Act, which is the project of school play, I finally got lines!! Well, actually, those are stolen from other part, haha.  I’m happy though.  In addition, I got a job of running crew, too.  We have in-house performances and in zone performance in April.  One day, I went to Drama room to be corrected my pronunciation of lines by teacher, she was so busy and I had to wait for her.  Then, directors and an actor from our play came there coincidentally and they checked my pronunciations.  The actor has been Japan before, so he taught me like “This sound is the same as this Japanese word.”  It’s so easy for me to understand. 

 

Perhaps , many of exchange student-to-be admire Prom or Grad. In Canada, we have Grad, it’s not Prom, but students wear beautiful dresses or suits and caps and gowns and take photos.  First things first, I bought a dress!!  I went to a store with my host family and tried on some dresses, orange one, pink one, gray one, purple one…  That time was really fun!  Also I had Grad photo.  It’s same as Japanese one, taking pictures for yearbook, album, etc.  However, students can bring or take something he/she wants, for example, with basketball, musical instruments, or their pets!!  It’s so fun! 

 

Actually, I sometimes feel don’t wanna back to Japan. Some people ask me “Do you miss Japan?”, however, I’m feeling comfortable in Canada, too.  It’s not like when I’m in Japan, but it’s way better than when I come here.  I gonna spend rest of days in Canada more preciously.

P.S. I bought contacts today for my play and grad. I thought my host family would disagree with me when I say, but, in fact, they agreed with me and made an appointment.  It’s always worth a try.
