アメリカのサウス・ダコタ州、セントラル高校に留学中の平林菜々さんから、第1回目の留学報告が届きました。

こんにちは！菜々です。私は今、サウス・ダコタ州のアバーディーンに住んでいます。

私はここに、ベミジでの10日間の語学キャンプを終えてやって来ました。キャンプでは、湖や買い物、ダウンタウンを散策したりして、プログラムを全て堪能しました。そこでは日本の友達がたくさんいたので生活するのに苦労しなかったのですが、今は皆それぞれの派遣場所にいます。ベミジでのすべてが懐かしいですが、思い出に浸っている余裕はありません。私に与えられた時間はたった9ヶ月です。自分の力で、偉大な1年にする決意です。

　そして今、私はセントラル高校に通っています。ここには1200人もの学生がいるのですが、校舎は2階建てなのでいつも込み合っています。もし私が誰かにぶつかると、ぶつかり返してきます。これまで何度か仕返しされました(笑)。授業は1コマが90分で1日4コマ授業があります。90分というと長そうに聞こえますが、そうでもないです。それはおそらく私が授業について行くのに精一杯だからでしょう。でも、私にもようやく友達が出来たんです！一緒にお昼ご飯を食べたり、時々放課後一緒に出掛けたりもします。ショッピングモールでこの間、友達と一緒にプリクラもどきの機械で写真を撮ったのですが、日本のように顔を編集したりする機能はありませんでした。とにかく、友達はいつも私を助けてくれて、私を幸せにしてくれています。

　私のホストファミリーは子供がすでに独立しているのですが、娘さんがファミリーの家の１階でデイケアセンターを営んでいるので、いつもにぎやかです。ホストファミリーはとても理解があります。私がここに来た時、不安とベミジのホストファミリーが恋しくて泣いていたのですが、ファミリーはそんな私の気持ちを理解してくれて、私に「時間が解決してくれるから、それまで辛抱して、強くなってね。」と言ってくれました。この言葉と彼らの優しさに救われています。

週末はキャンプに行きました。ファミリーは「ただ寛ぎましょう」と言ったのですが、本当にダラダラと過ごしただけでした。またすぐにキャンプに行く予定です。

　別の言葉で暮らすというのはとても大変で、私はよく無意識のうちに「いただきます」とか「よいしょ」とか日本語で言ってしまいます。すると他の人たちが怪訝そうな顔をして「今なんて言ったの？」と聞いてきて、こういう日本語は説明するのが難しいのですが、それも良い英語の勉強です。

　マシュマロのことで皆さんにお話ししたいことが2つあります。アメリカの人はマシュマロが大好きで、スモアというマシュマロのデザートを食べるんです。それを焼いてビスケットとチョコレートで挟んで食べます。とっても美味しいので是非試してみてください！もう1つは、チャビーバニーという、口に入るマシュマロの数を競い合うゲームをやったのですが、私達が使ったマシュマロはボルフボールほどの大きさがあって、私の結果は7つでした。ゲーム中のベストフォトを添付します。ちなみに勝ったのは美縁（北星5Gのメンバー）で、結果は9つでした。

　私のアメリカ生活は始まったばかりです。これから問題や心配事も出てくると思いますが、サウス・ダコタやベミジ、日本の家族や友達が支えてくれています。皆に助けられながら、失敗を暮らしながら一歩一歩進んでいきます。私はアメリカにいて幸せです！それでは皆さんお元気で、お体に気をつけて下さいね。菜々

Hello! I’m Nana. I’m staying in Aberdeen, in South Dakota.

I came here after the language camp in Bemidji for 10 days. At the camp, we went to lakes, shopping, and exploring downtown, and enjoy the all program. Those 10 days were easy to communicate because there were a lot of Japanese friends. Now we’re in each place to study. I miss everything which we’ve had in Bemidji, but I can’t afford to remember. It’s only 9 month given to me. I determined to make a great year by myself.

Then now I go to the Central High School, there are about 1200 people, but the school building is two story. It’s crowded every day, and if I bumped against someone, sometimes they pay back. I’ve been paid back someone’s. Haha. Schedule is 4 classes of 90 minutes. It looks long but not so much. It’s probably because I’m full to following classes. However I got friends finally! We have lunch, and sometimes hang out after school. I took a picture like purikura with friends at the mall. It certainly doesn’t have function to edit own face. Anyway, they are helpful and make me happy.

My host family is only parents, but their daughter runs daycare in downstairs of my house, so it’s very lively every day. My host family is understanding me. When I arrive here, I cried because of anxiety and missing previous host family in Bemidji. But they accepted my feeling, and told me that, “Time will heal you, so be patient, be brave.” The words and their warmth have been helping me.

I went camping on weekend. Host family said, “Just relax!” and actually we just hung out lazily. I’ll go camping at once.

It’s hard to live with other language, and I often speak Japanese unconsciously, like “Itadakimasu” and “yoisho”. Then others become question face and say “What did you say!?” Those words are hard to explain, but it’s a kind of practicing English.

I have two topics which I want to tell you about marshmallows. People in America like it. They eat called S’more which is dessert of marshmallows. We bake it and catch with biscuits and chocolate. It’s really good and please try it! Another is I had a game called chubby bunny which compete the number of marshmallows in own mouth, in Bemidji camp. The marshmallow we used were big like a golf ball. My result was 7. I attach my best picture while the game. The winner was Miyori in Hokusei, and 9 marshmallows, by the way.

My life in America has just begun. I will have problem and worry, but I know that I’m supported by my families and friends in South Dakota, Bemidji, and Japan. I’ll make my way with help and failures. I’m happy also in America! See you and take care! 🙂
