アメリカに留学中の櫻井綾音さんから第4回目の留学報告が届きました。

みなさんこんにちは。ミシシッピ州に留学している櫻井綾音です！早くもこれが第4回目のレポートです。早いですね本当に！今日は、いつもとは違う観点でレポート書いてみたいと思います！私の見ている世界、思っていることを皆さんに共有したいと思うのですが、上手くまとめられる自信は無いです笑　あくまでも私の意見、私の地域ではこうだ、という話なのでそうなんだ〜程度に読んでいただけると嬉しいです！

まずはアクセントについてです！私がミシシッピに留学すると決まった時一番不安だったことが南部訛りでした。綺麗な英語学べないなとまで思っていたのも事実です。まあ、こちらの人々やっぱり訛りありました。特に、男の子とお年寄りの方が訛ってるな〜って思います。でもこの訛りすごい可愛いんですよ。聞き取れるようになるまでに時間はかかったけど、とにかく南部訛り可愛いです。お隣のアラバマ州やルイジアナ州の人とは話したことがないので、お隣の訛り事情はよくわからないのですが、テキサス州から越してきた友達曰く、州によっても全然違うみたいです。まあこれは日本で考えても同じですよね。北海道と青森の訛りも全然違うのと同じなんだなってことで疑問は解決しました。話してる時のアクセント、発音も人によってバラバラです。言葉では説明しずらいですが、私のマザーは曜日を言う時、例えばTuesdayをチューズディーと言います。Dayの部分の発音がほとんどアルファベットのDと言っている感じです。けど私のシスターは私が日本で習ったような感じで発音します。この間友達がagain のa をu寄りで発音するかしないかでもめていて、どっちでもいいじゃんって正直思いながら聞いてたけど、日本でも抑揚の違いで言い争うことたまにありますよね笑　少し話が逸れましたが、訛りの話に戻します。学校が始まって3~4ヶ月くらいずっと私が直面していた問題が、自分のアクセントが伝わらないのが怖くて話せない！と言う問題でした。これを友達に相談したら、その友達の答えは、みんな完璧な英語なんて話さないし、人それぞれアクセントとかも違うから、そんなの気にすることでは無いと言われました。むしろ日本人のアクセントって可愛いなって思うよ。だから気にしないでもっと話してって言われて、衝撃を受けました。英語って本当にいろんな訛りありますよね。アジア訛りの英語だったり、イギリス英語とアメリカ英語でも全然違うし。どの英語が正解で間違ってるっていうことではないんだなと気づかされました！でもやっぱり腑に落ちないことがあって、やっぱり現地の人に近い英語のアクセントで会話がしたいなって思いますよね、事実フィリピンから移住してきた子は綺麗に英語喋ります。たった3年前に移住してきたばかりなのに、どうして？と腑に落ちなかったので、聞いてみたら、彼も最初は訛りだらけで周りの人に理解されるのに時間がかかったって言ってました。けど、自分がアメリカのアクセントで話せるようになるよりもずっと前に友達が自分のアクセントを理解してくれるようになって、そのおかげで会話のスピードも上がって自分のアクセントも徐々に現地の人に近いものになったって言ってました。この話をきいて、自分の中でだいぶ会話をすることの怖さ？と言うか恐怖心はなくなりました。やっぱり話さないと治らないって、日本にいる時からたくさん言われていたし、自分でも知っていたつもりだったけど、それを行動に移すのって難しいことですよね。今も努力中です。

次は私がホストファミリーと行っている教会の話をさせてください！北星の人も、そうでないという人も想像してみてほしいのですが、教会といえば、日の光が入った明るいお部屋で、場にあった服装を着て、賛美歌を歌って、牧師さんのお話を聞く、そんな場所ですよね？　私が、今行っている教会に初めて来た時は口を閉じるのも忘れるくらい驚きの連続でした。まず、一応名前には〇〇churchと書いてあるのに見た目はなんだか教会のような感じではなくて、十字架もどこにもありません。教会の中に入ってみるとなかは真っ暗で、いい感じの照明があって、まるでライブ会場です。大きなステージがあるんですが、その両端の大きなスクリーンに礼拝が始まるまでのカウントダウンがありました。そして礼拝が始まるとギターを持った男の人三人とボーカルらしき女の人と、キーボードを弾く人とドラムを叩く人が出て来て、賛美歌とは似てもつかない音楽が大音量で流れ始めました。クリスチャンソングと呼ばれる、賛美歌とは違った現代の音楽のスタイルで、歌詞の内容は同じく神様のことを歌っている曲ですが、そんな曲を数曲歌いました。その後、椅子が用意されてあるのでその椅子に座って人が出て来て話を聞くんだろうなと思ったらなんと出て来たのは、ステージの両端にあるスクリーンの何倍も大きいスクリーン！天井から出て来ました。そこに写った人がお話をしていたんですが、後からマザーに聞いてみるとこの教会は3箇所にキャンパスを持つ教会で、一番大きな教会にいる牧師さんのお話をビデオ中継しているそうです。ちなみにこの教会はオンライン配信もしていて、教会に行かなくてもネットからその礼拝に参加することができるというなんとも現代らしい教会です。ちなみに私の地域はbaptismという宗派がとても多いのですが、これは洗礼を受けることをとても大切にしているので、教会の礼拝のはじめに毎回何人かが洗礼を受けています。水の中に半身だけ浸かるタイプの洗礼です。実は私は友達に誘われてカトリックの教会にもお邪魔したことがあるし、昔ながらのbaptismの教会にもお邪魔したことがあります。そのまた別の教会は御老人ばかりの小さな教会でしたが、私が日本で行ったことのある教会に近いような、賛美歌を歌って主の祈りを唱えて、そんな教会にもお邪魔したことがあります。私を昔ながらのbaptismの教会に誘ってくれた友達によると、私が通っている教会は賛否両論あるそうです。昔ながらの礼拝スタイルを大切にする人は、私の行っている教会をまず教会だと認めていないそうです笑　教会にもいろんなスタイルがあるんだなーとこれも大きな学びになりました。面白いなと思ったのが、日本人はキリスト教を信じている人もいれば、仏教や神道を信じている人もいますがこっちの人は大抵の人が教会に行くのが普通ですよね。昔のPuritanの中には教会に毎週行かないで、日曜日に働きに行って、自分の子供に洗礼を受けさせないというだけで悪魔だという疑いをかけられて首吊りにされたりなんてこともあったそうです。それに昔のアメリカは教会に通う白人の男の人でないと参政権を与えられなかった時代もあるそうです。教会に行く人イコール正しい人みたいな感覚は今でも残っている感じがします。だけど教会ってすごくいい場所だなと思います。１つのコミュニティーだし週に一回同じ地域の人と同じ場所で顔を合わせて世間話のできる素敵な場所だと、そんなところに通わない人がいたら、どんな事情であっても、 人を避けているのかな？何かあるのかな？と不思議に思ってしまうのは確かにあるかもしれません。

こんな感じでまとまりのない話をグダグダと書いてきましたがここまで読んでくださった方ありがとうございます！帰国までもう70日もありません！残りの時間本当に無駄にしないようにいろんなことを吸収していきたいなと思います！皆さんも、年度末、新学期の始まる準備などでお忙しいと思いますがどうか体を壊さないように気をつけてください！

 Hi! I’m Ayane. This is my fourth report from Mississippi! Today, I’d like to write about something different. I want to share something for you guys today but I’m not sure if I can wrap everything I want to tell you up. What I’m about to tell you is just my opinion, and it might not be true, so I’m telling you just for your information.

So first of all, I’d like to talk about an accent. When I got information that I’m going to Mississippi for my studying abroad, I was so anxious because I’ve heard that people here talk with southern accent. And the truth was, yes, people in southern part of America has an accent. But it doesn’t mean every person has a strong southern accent, some people has it, but the others just talk with little bit accent. Especially elder people and boys have a strong southern accent, people here call them country boy. But their accent is actually really cute, even though it took a while to come to understand what they are saying. One of my friend moved to here from Texas, and she said people in Texas speak differently compared to people in Mississippi. I’ve never talked to people from Louisiana or Alabama, which is the states next to Mississippi, so I have no idea how differently people talk in Mississippi, and in the other southern states. But I guess it’s just like Japan, people in Hokkaido and people in Aomori speak with different accent, right? We have Mississippi accent, and other states have their own accent. It’s not just between states, even in Mississippi, people speak with their own accent. It’s hard to explain but for example, my host mom pronounces “Tuesday” as Tues “D”. The pronunciation of “day” is almost same as the alphabet “D”. I know it’s weird, I got confused when I first came here too. But my host sister pronounces “Tuesday” as almost same way as I learned in Japan. The other day my friends was arguing about the pronunciation of “again”, they were talking about which pronunciation is correct, “again” or “ugain”.  Anyway what I wanted to tell you is that I was afraid of speaking English for about first 3-4 months since I came here. Because I was afraid that people would not understand my accent, my strong Japanese accent. So I told my friend about it, and I was so surprised at what she said. She said nobody talks with perfect English accent, each person has their own accent, and it is not about what is correct and what is wrong, and she told me that I don’t have to care about my accent, she even said that I don’t have to correct my accent because she thought my English with Japanese accent is really cute.  I thought she is right, because English has so many accent, such as American English and British English, there’s no answer which English is perfect English. I was too worried about my English, but I still didn’t understand the way she said I don’t have to correct my accent, because I wanted to speak English clear enough for people here to understand me. So I asked a boy who came here from Philippines three years ago. He said he had a Filipino accent at first too, and people around him had hard time to understand what he was saying. But they came to understand his accent, so the conversation became more active, and he came to speak clearly before he knew it. He told me that if people understand my accent, the conversation would be more quickly, and you’ll get clear accent. I again realized how important it is to talk, even though I knew it before I came here. I knew I needed to do it as much as possible but it wasn’t easy. I’m still trying my best.

Next, let me talk about a church I go to with my host family. I guess most Japanese people associate churches with, big bright room with the sunlight comes in, people wear formal clothes, and they sing hymns, and they listen to pastors talk…right? Well I was so surprised when I first came to my church. I couldn’t even close my mouth. My church wasn’t like “CHURCH”, even though it says Venture church on the sign.  As I walked into the church, it was dark, but there are lights and it was like a concert hall. There were a big stage and big two screens besides the stage. As the church service started, a band with three guitars and one each vocal, keyboard, and drums stood on the stage and sung some songs, which is called Christian song. It is like hymns with contemporary style of music.  After that, I was expecting a pastor to come out and talk to us. But the huge screen came out instead of the pastor, but the pastor was in the screen! After the service, my mom told me that this church has three campuses, and we were listening the pastor who was talking in the biggest campus. This church is doing a live stream, they even do online church service too, for people who are not able to go to church. In south Mississippi, baptism is the major branches. It is most important to get baptized in the baptism church. This baptize is only to put half of body into the water. We won’t go to river to get baptized. I’ve been to some other churches too. My friends asked to go to their church with them, so I went to catholic, and old-fashioned baptism. That was great experience to visit different type of church, I learned a lot of things there. Most Japanese people don’t go to church because they don’t believe Jesus Christ, but most people in America go to church every Sunday. What was interesting is that the Puritans had to go to church every Sunday, get baptized, and they were not allowed to work on Sunday. If they don’t follow these rules, people were put under a suspicion of seeing devil, and they would be hanged. Also, old American suffrage was only for white men who go to church. Even though people who is over 18 in America today have the right to vote, and they have the right to choose to go to church or don’t, I feel like people in America think that people should go to church, and if someone chose not to go to church, he or she would be seen as bad person. But I think the church is good place, it is one of the community, where people get together and talk about themselves.

I only have about 70 days left till I go back to Japan, I will learn everything as much as I can, and spend my rest of exchange year meaningfully!  This season is the end of school year and I bet you guys are being busy, but take care and see you in next report!
