アメリカのオハイオ州、ハイランド高校に留学中の伊藤麻佑さんから第1回目の留学報告が届きました。

 

こんにちは！オハイオ州のシャーロンセンターにステイしています、伊藤麻佑です。みなさんは夏も終わり北海道らしい寒い季節が近づいてきたと思いますが何事も変わりなく過ごしていますか？私は生活する場所が変わっただけで相変わらずマイペースに気持ち良く過ごしています。研修のベミジからここに来るときはものすごく緊張していたのが嘘のように、生活が慣れて落ち着いて暮らしています。でも、人生初の寿司の舟盛りを食べた時、大好きなアメリカンテイストの手羽先を頬張った時にがっつり食あたりになり、気温が頻繁に３０度から１０度くらいになるのについていけずこじらせてしまいました。もともと体力がない私には留学においてこれは試練だなと思います。笑

 

さてさて、前置きが長くなりましたが私の留学レポートを書きますね。私がステイしている町、 シャーロンセンターはオハイオ州の大体真ん中ら辺に位置する小さいけどさほど田舎ではないところなので、札幌外出身の私にとってとても住み心地がよく気に入っています。私のホストファミリーは３人家族でサムという男の子の猫を飼っています。Dadはとても優しくて私はDadのジョークが大好きです。きっと日本でいう寒いジョークに笑ってしまうのでMomにいつも笑うんじゃないと言われます。また、どんなことにも一生懸命で誠実なところが素敵です。Momは日本人の女性よりとてもしっかりいるんじゃないかというくらいきちんとしている方で最初は緊張した時もありましたが、いまではとても頼っているし尊敬しています。それにマザーはPinterestを見て料理するのがとても好きでさらに料理上手なので、毎日のディナーが楽しみで仕方ありません！Brotherは優しくてユニークです。私が質問したら必ず丁寧に教えてくれるし、それに成績優秀なんです。それにありがたいことにBrotherが最近運転免許を取ったので学校までは彼の運転で行っています。ホストファミリーは音楽が大好きで、たまに音楽の話をしたりするのも私は好きです。そういえばこの前初めて野外のクラシックコンサートに行ってきました。その時はスターウォーズやハリーポッターなどの映画音楽が中心で、またMomの友達も一緒だったのでとても素敵な時間を過ごせました。

 

私の通っている学校はハイランドハイスクールと言って全校生徒が役900人ほどの中規模の学校です。私はここについた次の日から学校が始まったので、最初はトイレばっかりしたくなるくらいものすごい緊張していましたがいまでは大好きです！ここの学校の先生達やカリキュラムや生徒が大好きです。アメリカでは１人に１人ずつカウンセラーと呼ばれる自分のスケジュールを管理してくれたり相談に乗ってくれたりする人がつくのですが、私のカウンセラーは第１印象から今まで全然変わらない良い人です。登校初日、緊張しすぎた私をほぐしてくれ て、今仲良くしている友達を紹介してくれて、更に少しでもすれ違ったら必ず私の心配をしてくれるんです。他の教科の先生も全員優しくておもしろいです。ハイランドはアメリカ全体から見ても秀才がたくさんいる学校で、またFine arts(芸術科目)がとても栄えているので授業でFine artsがあったりします。私は昔から運動より音楽が得意だったのでここの学校に来られたのは良い巡り合わせでした。選択した科目は、グローバルクッキング(世界の料理の勉強)、オーケストラ、アルジブラ(数学の代入など)、バンド、英語とアメリカンヒストリーです。ハイランドの生徒はFine artsは１教科しか選ぶことができないのに留学生という特別対応でなんと２教科も選ぶことができたんです！しかも普通のオーケストラのクラスはバイオリン、ビオラ、チェロ、コントラバスで構成されているものなのですが、私はピアノを小さい頃からならっていたので特別にピアノのパートを用意してくれて毎日のクラスに参加しています。近いうちに学校でのコンサートにも参加予定なのでとても楽しみです。でもハイランドに来て１番好きなのはバンドのクラスです。初めて聞いたときは吹奏楽部みたいなものかなと想像していたのですが、授業に参加してびっくり！とっても大規模なマーチングバンドだったのです。アメリカの国民的スポーツ、そして娯楽はアメリカンフットボールです。毎週様々なゲームが行われていて私のホストファミリーも大ファンです。フットボールにはハーフタイムというのがあって、その時にショーをするのがマーチングバンドです。日本にいたら想像しがたいですがとても大規模でフットボールにおいて切っては切れない存在がマーチングバンドなんです。その中で私はフルートのパートに入っています。毎週金曜日にハイスクールフットボールは行われるので、毎週新しい楽譜を渡されて、譜読みをして、合わせて、更にマーチングも覚えます。さらに木曜日は翌日のゲームに向けて夜にリハーサルをします。始まった時本当にハードだったんですが、バンドメンバーも優しくてマーチング未経験者の私に一生懸命教えてくれたのもあって、今ではだいぶ慣れて私もバンドメンバーの一員です！ゲームの前に友達とどこかご飯を食べに行ってから準備を始めるのですがそれも大好きです。なんと言っても毎週ゲームを見ることができるのでフットボールのルールもわかるようになったし、ほとんどの応援歌や勝った時に歌う校歌もバッチリです。ハイランドも、オハイオ州立大学もフットボールが強いのでフットボールの大ファンです！バンドメンバーは２００人以上いるので様々な学年、人柄、趣味があって楽しいです。私の友達はほとんどがバンドメンバーでこの前行われたホームカミングのダンスパーティーもバンドの友達と行きました。私にとってホームカミングは生まれて初めてのダンスパーティーだったので少し緊張もありましたがすごく楽しむことができました！ダンスパーティーが始まる前に友達の家で写真を撮ってから私を含めて７人で有名なイタリアンレストランでディナーをしてから向かいました。私はサーモングリルを注文し、よくよく考えるとアメリカに来て初めての魚をそこで食べました。もうアメリカ生活が始まって２ヶ月ほど経とうとしているのに…。 笑 その後友達の車に乗せてもらってダンスパーティーが行われる学校まで行きました。いつもと学校の雰囲気が全然違って友達のドレスやスーツ姿がすごく良かったです！もうそこから覚えてないくらい楽しかったです！笑 パートナーがいない私にとってスローダンスはちょっと苦痛でしたがそれ以外は本当に最高でした！次のダンスパーティーが楽しみで仕方ありません。

 

こんな感じで私の留学生活はなかなか満足のいくものになっていると思います。でも、今の私にとって授業を理解するよりも友達との会話のハイスピードの英語についていくのが本当に大変です。最初よりかはだいぶ理解できるようになってもすぐ瞬発的に英語がスラスラ出てこなくて数センテンスでの返しが今の状況です。いつになったら英語喋れるようになるんだろう、いつになったら自分らしさを出せるんだろう、いつになったら友達から必要とされる存在になれるんだろうって悩む時もあります。学校での会話が会話じゃなくてただ質問されたことに答えた時だけの日もあります。そんな中だからこそいつもよりきちんと話すことができたり、友達が私のぐちゃぐちゃな英語を理解してくれた時は本当に嬉しくて自分で自分を褒めるようにしています！笑 毎日が反省だらけだけどこれはアメリカに来られたから感じることのできる悔しさで、でも必ず克服することができると信じています。１分１秒が学習という濃密な時間は勉強するより大変ですが、こんな経験できるのは人生に１度きりです。本当に留学できたことに感謝しています。せっかくの時間と経験を無駄にしないように日々前進していけるように頑張ります。次のレポートでは今より英語が上達していることをお知らせできるはずなので、この日本語より更に下手な日本語になっていると思いますがまたよかったら読んでください。笑 最後まで読んでくれてありがとうございました。

 

Hi! I’m Mayu from Sharon Center, Ohio. How are you doing these days? Season of Hokkaido may have changed to fall. I’m doing well. I can spend at my own pace even changing place to live. It was unbelievable that I was so nervous when I left at Bemdji to here, I can get used to this life. However I got a food poisoning when I eat funamori of sushi that first experience in my life and my favorite wings with American taste. Also I caught a cold due to sudden temperature changes.  for example changing to 10℃ from 30℃. I’m weak when I was child, so this’s hardship while my study trip. haha

 

Anyway, this introduction has become quite long but I’ll start to write my report. My staying town is Sharon Center that a kind of small town but not a country side located at the middle of Ohio. I’m from other city of Sapporo, so I like it so much, also feeling comfortable for me. There are 3 members of my host family with a boy cat named Sam. Dad is so honest and I like his Joke very much. Maybe his joke was older and Japanese say samui, so mom always says me do not laughing. Mom is very steady person than Japanese women, so I was nervous at first. But in now I can turn to her for help, Also I respect her. She likes to cook the new cuisine searching Pinterest, moreover she’s good at cooking very well. I’m looking forward to eat everyday dinner made by her very much! My host brother is kind and unique. If I ask something swaddling question he’s sure to answer me, and he’s smart and good student! Fortunately he got the driver license these days so I can take his car every day. They like music very much and I like talking about music with them sometimes. Anyway I went to outside classic concert. The concert mainly music of movie music such as “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter”, I had a great time because I could go there with my host family and friends of host mom.

 

My host school name is highland high school and there are around 900 students in here. I started school at next day of when I arrive here and I was so nervous so much that I go to the restroom many times, but now I love this school so far! Particular I love teachers, education curriculum, and students. In general at American school has counselor that administer schedule and give advice for students one by one, my counselor is nice so that not change his first impression. For instant, when I go to school for the first time he relaxed my tension, invited student who is getting along me so far moreover when he pass by me, he always caring me every time. Other teachers are kind and unique. There are many smart students in highland seen from US. Also there are classes of fine arts because very popular fine arts in here. I had been good at playing music than sports since when I was a kid, so it was miracle that I could come here. I’ve taken classes of global cooking, orchestra, algebra, band, English, US history. Actually students of highland can’t take 2 fine arts classes, however I can take those because I’m an exchange student! Also orchestra class consists of violin, viola, cello, contrabass, but I can join part of piano at everyday class because I’ve learned piano for a long time. The orchestra concert will hold soon I’m very exciting! Even out of those I like band the best in highland. I imaged a kind of normal brass band before came here, when I took band class at first I was so surprised! It was so huge marching band. The most popular sports is American football in US , and it represents US. Various football games hold every week, also my host family are fan too! It has a half time and marching band play and show while this time. Probably you can’t image it, but it is so huge and important to game. Even among those I play the flute. We are taken the new score every week, reading the music score, playing the music with all instruments, moreover doing the marching while playing music because high school football game holds every Friday night. Also every Thursday night has rehearsal to prepare tomorrow night and it was so hard for me. However every band mates so kind and helpful to me even an inexperienced, in now I’m a decent member of marching band! I like to go to restaurant with my friends before game every time. But no matter what, I can watch the football game every Friday, so I understand the rule so far of course I can PERFECTLY sing school song and cheering song! Moreover highland and the Ohio State University have strong of football team so I became to like it so much. There are about 200 students that are various grads, characters, hobbies in our marching band, so I can have a great time with them. Many my friends join the marching band and I went homecoming dance party with them too! I felt nervous because it was the first dance party ever but I could spend so much fun!! Before dance party we were taken picture and went to famous Italian restaurant with 7 people include me. I got a salmon grill, probably it was the first time seafood for me. Already my American life started for 2 month…haha. After that I could get a ride with my friend to school. It was so good atmosphere in school and everyone wore dresses and suits look so nice! Thence I didn’t remember it. Why? It was sooooooooo FUN!!! Dance party was supreme for me without slow dance! I didn’t have a partner so I don’t like it. XD I became to like dance party I’m looking forward next time.

 

My study trip is roughly like this and I’m satisfied with it. However it’s hard for me to understand friend’s English than class’s English as of now. I can understand English than before, but I can’t remind English quickly so my replying is short sentence. I sometime wonder about “When how soon can I use English well.” “When how soon can I express myself.” “When how soon I might be needed by my friend.” I didn’t talk just answer about question in a day. In a situation like that if I can use English well or my friends are understood my poor English, I praise myself! Everyday is lessons for me, but I believe that will be able to overcome those absolutely! Any minutes or seconds is learning at study trip is more difficult than studying, but this time is once in a life. I appreciate to be able to come here a lot. I’ll try that not waste the time and experience and keep challenging myself!
