アメリカのミシガン州に留学している前田深月さんから第１回目の留学報告が届きました。

こんにちは！私は2026年度長期留学生の前田深月です。今回は初めての留学レポートということで、約1カ月が経ったここまでの生活、留学先の紹介、留学の目標をお話ししたいと思います。私は、8月14日にアメリカに出発し、そこから約10日間ミシガン州のグランドラピッズで行われた現地オリエンテーションプログラムに参加しました。このプログラムでは、これから始まる留学生活に向けてのマナーやアメリカの歴史、授業の様子などを学ぶだけでなく、Lake Michiganやピザ作り、グランドラピッズの有名な場所に行くなどの楽しい活動がたくさんあり、初めて出会った日本各地から集まった交換留学生とともにとても濃い10日間を過ごすことができました。このプログラム期間中も、宿泊はホームステイで、ミシガンのホストファミリーとは野球を見に行ったりファミリーみんなでサッカーをしたり映画を見たり、湖に行ってサップに乗るなど短い期間の中でたくさんの体験をさせてもらいました。あっという間に10日間が過ぎ、本科地に向かう日、ホストファミリーには「絶対にまた会いに来るね！」と約束し、最高の友達になった留学メンバーとは「10カ月間頑張ろう、次会うときは英語で会話しようね！」とお互いを応援しあってそれぞれの州に出発しました。本音を言うと今はまだミシガンの日々が恋しくて悲しくなる日がありますが、「みんなそれぞれの場所で頑張っているから頑張ろう！」と、気持ちを切り替えて頑張っています。ここからは、私の本科地のことについてお話します！私は、サウスカロライナ州のリッジスプリングという場所に留学しています。リッジスプリングは人口が600人にも満たないとても小さな町で、どこを見ても森。そしてとても暑い地域で、昼間は45℃近くになることもありますが、私は暑いのが大好きなので嬉しいです！サウスカロライナは私にとってとても過ごしやすい地域ですが、私は今まさにサウスアクセントの壁にぶち当たっています。ミシガンにいたとき、ホストファミリーや現地の人との会話は特に困ることがなく、毎日新しい言葉を学んで、「こうやって英語が喋れるようになっていくんだ、10カ月後はペラペラだな！」と思っていました。ですがサウスカロライナに来てから、アクセント＋早口で聞き取る事ができず、学校の授業も何も理解ができないという突然の状況に混乱し、英語を話すことに自信が無くなってしまいました。ですが、学校の先生や生徒のみんなは本当にやさしくて私が理解してなさそうにすると簡単な言葉で言い直してくれたり、ゆっくり話してくれたり、何かできることある？と声をかけてくれたりするので本当に助かっています。学校の授業では、ウェイトリフティングのクラスを取っていて、これがほんとにキツイ。ベンチプレスやダンベルなどボディービルダーにでもなるのかというようなトレーニングを毎日しています。とてもきついですが、みんな互いに「あなたならできる！よくやった！」と励ましあっていてほんとに大好きな授業です。そして私は、クロスカントリーのチームに入りました！まだ入って一週間ですが、チームの雰囲気が最高で、練習の時も互いを励ましあい、私の初めてのレースの時はみんな褒めてハイタッチをしてくれる、ほんとにいい人たちばかりのチームです。この約1カ月間の留学生活で経験したたくさんのことを話していると長くなってしまったので、最後に留学の目標をお話しして今回のレポートは終わりにします！私の留学の目標は、「まずはやってみる」「いろいろな文化や違いを学び理解する」「英語を流暢に話せるようになる」です！最後まで読んでいただきありがとうございました。また次回のレポートで！ 

Hello! My name is Mizuki Maeda. I’m studying abroad in the U.S. for 10 months. Since this is my first report, I’d like to talk about my life since coming here, introduction to the place of my study abroad, and my goals for studying abroad. I left Japan on August 14th and joined the 10-day orientation program held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I not only learned about manners, U.S. history and the American school system, but also had many fun experiences during this program. I was able to spend 10 wonderful days with other exchange students from all over Japan. During this program, I stayed with my host family in Michigan, and we went to a baseball game, played soccer, walked our dog, watched movies, and went to a lake. They gave me many opportunities to experience new things in such a short period of time. The 10 days flew by, and it was time to leave Michigan and head to my host family’s home. I said to my Michigan family, “I’ll definitely come back!” And the other exchange student who became my best friends, and I said to each other, “Good luck for the 10 months! The next time we meet, let’s talk in English!” Speaking honestly, some days, I feel sad because I miss the days I spent in Michigan. But I know that the other exchange students are doing their best in their own places, too, so I’m changing my mindset and doing my best. Now, I’ll talk about the place of my study abroad. I’m studying abroad in Ridge Spring, South Carolina. It’s very rural and the population is less than 600. There are forests everywhere I look. Ridge Spring is a very hot area and it gets close to 45℃ during the day, but I love hot weather, so it’s really comfortable for me. However, I’m struggling with the southern accent now. 

When I was in Michigan, I didn’t have any problems communicating with my host family or local people, and I learned new words every day. So, I thought that I’d be able to speak English fluently in 10 months. However, after coming to South Carolina, I couldn’t understand what people were saying because of the accent and fast-talking, and I couldn’t keep up with classes. So, I felt overwhelmed and lost confidence in speaking English. But my teachers and my classmates are very supportive. They use simple words, speak slowly, and ask me, “Do you need help?” I really appreciate their support. In school classes, I’m taking a weightlifting class, and it’s so hard. But the students who are taking this class always encourage each other, so I love this class. And I joined a cross-country team! I’ll talk about my club in my next report. Although I had some difficulties, it was a fulfilling first month. Finaly, I’ll talk about my goals for studying abroad. My goals are “trying”, “Learning and understanding cultures”, and “Being able to speak English fluently” Thank you for reading, see you in my next report!
