カナダのバーナビーに留学している建山美波さんから第１回目の留学報告が届きました。

私は現在、カナダのバーナビーに約 1 年間の留学をしています。バーナビーはカナダの西海岸に位置しており、自然が豊かな一方で、さまざまな国や地域から来た人々が生活している、多文化的な都市です。私は今回の留学を通して、英語力を向上させるだけではなく、多民族国家であるカナダだからこそ学ぶことのできる、さまざまな文化や価値観について知りたいと考えています。
留学の最初の 1 か月は、ILSC という語学学校に通いました。そこで私は「Youth High School Bridge」という、高校生活を実際に体験することを目的とした授業を受けています。この授業では、Reading、Listening、Writing、Speaking、Conversation など、英語を使うために必要なさまざまな技能を学びます。日本の英語学習では、文法や単語などを中心に勉強することが多いですが、こちらでは実際に英語を使って人とコミュニケーションを取ることを重視していると感じました。また、3 限目には Grammar の授業を受けています。この授業では、単に文法を勉強するだけではなく、一つのテーマについて自分の意見を考えたり、他の人と話し合ったり、ディベートをしたりする機会もあります。そのため、正しい英語を学ぶだけでなく、自分の考えを英語で伝える力も身につけたいと思っています。
公立高校では語学学校とは異なり、実際のカナダの高校生と学校生活を送ることになります。授業だけでなく、友達との会話や学校行事、日常生活など、さまざまな場面で英語を使うことになるため、今まで以上に自分から行動することが必要になると思います。私の留学の一つ目の目標は、英語力を向上させることです。しかし、私は「英語を話せるようになる」ことだけを目標にはしたくありません。英語を使ってさまざまな国の人とコミュニケーションを取り、その人の考え方や文化を知ることを大切にしたいです。カナダは多民族国家であり、異なる文化や価値観を持つ人々が共に生活しています。その環境の中で、多くの人と関わることで、日本にいるだけでは気づかなかった考え方や価値観を学びたいです。
二つ目の目標は、さまざまな文化を学ぶことで、自分自身の人生の選択肢を広げることです。異なる文化や価値観を知ることで、「こうするのが普通」「将来はこうするべき」という自分の中にある固定された考え方を見直すことができると思います。そして、今まで知らなかった生き方や進路、仕事などを知ることで、自分の将来についてより広い視野から考えられるようになりたいです。
三つ目の目標は、この留学を自分の将来につながる経験にすることです。ただ「楽しかった」「英語が上達した」で終わらせるのではなく、留学を通して自分のどこが成長したのか、どのような経験をして、そこから何を感じ、これからどうしたいと思ったのかを具体的に説明できるようになりたいです。そのために、日々の出来事をただ経験するだけではなく、そこから何を学んだのかを意識して生活したいと思います。
この 1 年間を通して、英語力だけでなく、自分から行動する力や異なる価値観を受け入れる力、自分自身について考える力も身につけたいです。そして、留学で得た経験や学びを将来の進路や人生の選択に生かし、自分の将来に具体的に貢献できるものを作りたいと考えています。この留学を、自分の世界を広げ、将来の可能性を広げる 1 年間にしたいです。

Introduction to My Study Abroad Destination and My Goals
I am currently studying abroad in Vancouver, Canada, for one year. Vancouver is a city on the west coast of Canada. It is famous for its beautiful nature, but it is also a multicultural city where people from many different countries and backgrounds live together. One of the main reasons I wanted to study in Canada is that I can experience many different cultures and ways of thinking while improving my English. Through this experience, I want to learn not only about Canada, but also about myself and my future.
For the first month of my study abroad program, I attended ILSC, an English language school in Vancouver. I took a program called “Youth High School Bridge.” The purpose of this program is to experience a high school-like environment and prepare students for studying at a local high school.
In my classes, I studied Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking, and Conversation. These classes helped me practice using English in different situations. I also took a Grammar class. However, the class was not only about learning grammar rules. We sometimes discussed different topics, shared our opinions, and had debates. Because of this, I learned that studying English is not only about knowing correct grammar. It is also important to express my own ideas and communicate with other people.
After finishing my first month at the language school, I will attend a public high school in Vancouver. This will be a different experience from studying at a language school because I will have opportunities to spend time with local high school students and experience their everyday school life. I will need to use English in many situations, such as classes, conversations with friends, and school activities. I think this experience will be challenging, but it will also help me become more independent and confident.
My first goal for this study abroad experience is to improve my English skills. However, I do not want my goal to be simply “speaking English better.” I want to use English as a tool to communicate with people from different countries and learn about their cultures and values. Since Canada is a multicultural country, I have many opportunities to meet people who have different backgrounds from mine. By talking with them and learning from them, I hope to understand different ways of thinking and become more open-minded.
My second goal is to expand my choices for the future by experiencing different cultures and values. Before coming to Canada, I had many ideas about what was normal or what I should do in the future. However, meeting people with different backgrounds can help me realize that there are many different ways to live and think. I want to discover possibilities that I have never considered before. I believe that learning about different cultures will help me think about my future from a wider perspective.
My third goal is to make this one-year experience useful for my future. I do not want to finish my study abroad experience by simply saying, “It was fun” or “My English improved.” I want to be able to explain specifically how I changed, what I experienced, what I learned from those experiences, and what I want to do in the future because of them. Therefore, I want to pay attention to what I learn from my everyday experiences and think about how each experience can contribute to my growth.
During this one year, I want to improve not only my English skills, but also my ability to communicate, take action by myself, accept different values, and think deeply about my own future. I want to make the most of living in a multicultural environment and use this opportunity to expand my world. Finally, I hope to turn the experiences and knowledge I gain in Canada into something meaningful that will contribute to my future choices and goals.
