アメリカのワシントン州に留学している髙畑織羽さんから第１回目の留学報告が届きました。

『留学先の紹介と留学での目標』 

私の留学先はワシントン州にあるグレープビューというところです。日中は気温が上がり暑くなりますが、朝と夜は気温が下がり涼しくなります。外にいると寒く感じるくらいです。私のホストファミリーはマザー、ファザー、そして動物がたくさんいる家です。まだ二週間と少ししかたっていませんが色々な所に連れて行ってくださり私を大切にしてくださっているのが日々伝わってくるとても良いファミリーです。この家に留学生としてくることが出来て本当によかったなと思います。 

続いて留学での目標についてお話させていだたきます。日本にいるときは日常会話的な英会話はできるかなと思っていたのですが実際は想像の５０倍、１００倍といってもいいほど話すのが早くて日常会話をすることでいっぱいいっぱいで苦労しています。そして私は人に心を打ち解けるまでに時間がかかってしまうタイプなので英語が聞き取れなくてももう一度言っていただけるようにお願いすることができなくて、完全に理解できていないことで思い違いが生まれてしまいました。普段スクールバスを使って登下校しているのですが学校初日は行きにホストマザーが車で送ってくださったので帰りも迎えにきてくださるのかなと思いスクールバスに乗らずにホストファミリーのお迎えを待っていました。ですが本当はその日の帰りはスクールバスに乗らないといけない日で一時間程外で待機することになりました。その時は連絡も付かなかったため学校の先生にお願いしてホストマザー、ホストファザーどちらにも連絡していただき迎えに来ていただくことになりました。今回のことからわからないことをわからないままにすると色々な人に迷惑かけてしまうことを体験しました。なので私の目標は早い英語についていくこととわからないことはしっかり聞く、人に頼るのはあまり得意ではありませんが必要な時にしっかりと頼るということです。まだ始まったばかりの留学生活は思っていたより楽しいことも辛いことも多いけどこれからも英語と向き合って頑張ろうと思います。

My study abroad destination is Grapeview in Washington State. 

During the day, the temperature gets high and it is hot, but in the morning and at night, the temperature goes down and it becomes cool. Sometimes I feel cold when I am outside. 

My host family is my host mother, host father, and many animals. I have been here for a little more than two weeks, but they already took me to many places. I can feel that they really care about me every day, and they are a very good family. I am really happy that I could come to this family as an exchange student. My host mother and host father care about me like I am their own child. When I talk to them about my problems, they always listen to me seriously and try to understand me. They are also very happy when I teach them about Japanese culture. 

I cannot do much for them yet, so I feel like I am not giving back enough. But from now, I want to do more little by little. I want my host family to think, “I’m glad we accepted her,” and I will try my best to make them feel that way. 

Next, I will talk about my goals for studying abroad. 

When I was in Japan, I thought I could speak everyday English. But actually, people speak much faster than I thought. Maybe 50 times or even 100 times faster. It is difficult for me to understand, and just having everyday conversations is hard for me. 

Also, I am the type of person who needs time to open my heart to people. So when I don’t understand English, sometimes I can’t ask them to say it again. Because I don’t completely understand, sometimes we have a misunderstanding. 

Usually, I go to school by school bus. But on my first day of school, my host mother took me to school by car. So I thought she would pick me up after school too. Because of this, I didn’t ride the school bus and waited for my host family for about one hour. 

At that time, I couldn’t contact them, so I asked a teacher for help. The teacher contacted my host mother and host father, and they came to pick me up. 

From this experience, I learned that if I don’t understand something and leave it like that, it can cause trouble for other people too. 

So my goals are to understand fast English better, ask when I don’t understand something, and rely on other people when I need help. I am not good at relying on other people, but I want to try. 

My study abroad life has just started. There are more fun things and difficult things than I expected, but I will keep trying to face English and do my best.
