I am currently living in Carmichael, California, in the United States. It is located right near Sacramento, which happens to be the capital city of California. To be completely honest, before coming here, I did not even know where Sacramento was located! Like many people, I initially assumed that Los Angeles was the capital of the state, so learning about the actual capital was my very first surprising discovery upon arrival.
My host family’s house is truly beautiful. If I were a house myself, I think I would instantly fall in love with it! The surrounding area is extremely peaceful and filled with abundant natural greenery. My host mother loves gardening, so our yard is always blooming with vibrant flowers and tall, lovely trees. Because of all this lush vegetation, I often joke that there must be much more oxygen in the air here than average. Every single day, I feel like my lungs are naturally undergoing a refreshing cleansing process!
Our neighborhood is also full of energetic wildlife, especially squirrels. They are incredibly cute to watch as they run around the yard, although I always make sure to keep a safe distance just to be cautious. Seeing these local animals frequently makes me miss my rabbit back home in Japan, but playing near the nature here brings a different kind of joy. During my free time, one of my absolute favorite activities is going for a swim in our backyard pool. Today, I am taking a short break while enjoying a delicious American cinnamon roll!
My primary goal for this study abroad program is to significantly improve my English language skills. I want to challenge myself every day so that I can communicate more fluently, comfortably, and naturally with native speakers. In addition to academic progress, I am very excited to make many new friends from different backgrounds, experience American high school life to the fullest, and enjoy my youth. Beyond language and social life, I am deeply committed to achieving personal growth and becoming a more mature individual through this experience. I hope to expand my horizon, connect with people from all over the world, and build confidence that will help me succeed in the future.
It has now been about one month since I arrived in California. While living in a completely new environment with a different culture can sometimes bring small challenges and personal frustrations, I view these moments as valuable learning opportunities. Adapting to a host family requires flexibility, patience, and self-reflection. Even when I feel internally flustered, I try my best to remain polite, take responsibility for my actions, and apologize right away whenever I make a mistake. My goal during this exchange program is not to change who I am at my core, but rather to level up my character, overcome personal stubbornness, and become a more open-minded person. I am truly grateful for this amazing opportunity and look forward to making the most out of the rest of my journey!
