ニュージーランドに留学している小日向　咲南さんから第１回目の留学報告が届きました。

私は現在、ニュージーランドに留学しています。今回のレポートでは、留学を通じて研究したいテーマ、理由、研究手順について書きます。 

私が今回研究したいと思うテーマは、ニュージーランドの野生動物と人のかかわり方についてです。理由は二つあります。 

1. ニュージーランドには野生動物がたくさんいる 

ニュージーランドでは、普通の住宅街で野生の孔雀やハリネズミを見ることがあります。また、公園ではガチョウのような大きな鳥や、足の長い不思議な見た目をした鳥など様々な野生動物を見ることができます。 

私が生活していた北海道も比較的自然が多い地域だと思います。しかし、住宅街や公園で見かける野生動物は、カラスやスズメ、キツネなど、ある程度限られているように感じます。 

同じように自然が豊かな地域でも、北海道では市街地と自然が分かれていることが多く、普通の生活の中で自然を感じる機会はそれほど多くありません。一方、ニュージーランドでは自然に合わせるように住宅や街が作られていて、人の生活する場所にも自然が多く残っているように感じました。そのため、住宅街や公園など、普段の生活の中でも様々な野生動物を見ることができるのだと思います。 

これらの経験から、私は、自分が生活していた北海道とニュージーランドでは、人と自然、特に野生動物とのかかわりにはどのような違いがあるのか疑問に思いました。そこで、ニュー時ランドではなぜ人が生活する場所でも多くの野生動物を見ることができるのか、また、人々が野生動物とどのように共存しているのかを研究したいと思いました。 

1. 野生動物と人との距離が近い 

ニュージーランドで生活している中で、野生動物を身近に感じるだけでなく、人と野生動物が近い距離で生活していることにも興味を持ちました。例えば、ニュージーランドでは猫を家の中だけで買うのではなく、外に自由に出している過程を多く見かけます。私がホームステイしている家には猫が四匹いますが、四匹とも外に自由に出入りしています。学校の帰り道にも柵の上を歩く家猫などと遭遇する機会が良くあります。また、住宅街や公園でも動物を見いかに感じる機会が多く、人と動物が近い距離で生活しているように感じました。 

私はこのような環境を見て、ニュージーランドではどのように考えているのか、また、人々は野生動物や身近な動物とどのようにかかわっているのかに興味を持ちました。そこで、ニュージーランドでは人と動物がどのような距離感で生活しているのか、日本との違いも含めて調べたいと思いました。 

研究手順 

まず、ニュージーランドにはどのような生物が生息しているのかを調べます。次に実際の生活の中でどのような野生動物を、どのような場所で見ることができるのかを観察し、記録します。 

その後、ニュージーランドの人々が野生動物とどの様にかかわっているのかを調べます。また、猫などのペットがどのように飼われているのかにも注目し、日本との違いを調べます。 

最後に、調べたことや自分の監察結果を、これまで生活していた北海道でも経験と比較し、ニュージーランドではなぜ人と動物との距離が近いのか、その理由について考察します。 

Study Abroad in New Zealand ②

I am currently studying abroad in New Zealand. In this report, I will write about the topic I want to research through my study abroad experience, why I chose this topic, and how I will research it. 

The topic I want to research is the relationship between wild animals and people in New Zealand. There are two reasons for this. 

1. There are many wild animals in New Zealand.

In New Zealand, I sometimes see wild peacocks and hedgehogs in normal residential areas. Also, in parks, I can see many kinds of wild animals, such as large birds like geese and strange-looking birds with long legs. 

Hokkaido, where I lived before, also has a lot of nature. However, I feel that there are fewer kinds of wild animals in residential areas and parks. I usually see animals such as crows, sparrows, and foxes. 

From these experiences, I started to wonder how the relationship between people and nature, especially wild animals, is different between Hokkaido, where I lived before, and New Zealand. Therefore, I want to research why we can see many wild animals in places where people live in New Zealand, and how people live together with wild animals. 

2. People live close to wild animals.

While living in New Zealand, I became interested not only in the fact that wild animals are close to people, but also in how people and animals live close to each other. For example, in New Zealand, many people let their cats go outside instead of keeping them only inside the house. There are four cats in the house where I am staying, and all four cats can freely go in and out of the house. On my way home from school, I often see pet cats walking on fences. Also, I often see animals in residential areas and parks, so I feel that people and animals live close to each other. 

Seeing this environment made me interested in how people in New Zealand think about animals and how they interact with wild animals and animals that live close to them. Therefore, I want to research how people and animals live together in New Zealand and how this is different from Japan. 

Research Procedure 

First, I will research what kinds of animals live in New Zealand. Next, I will observe and record what kinds of wild animals I can see in my daily life and where I can see them. 

After that, I will research how people in New Zealand interact with wild animals. I will also look at how pets, such as cats, are kept and compare this with Japan. 

Finally, I will compare what I learned and what I observed with my experiences in Hokkaido. Then, I will think about why people and animals live so close to each other in New Zealand.
