アメリカに留学中の櫻井綾音さんから第3回目の留学報告が届きました。

みなさんこんにちは！少し遅めですが、新年明けましておめでとうございます！ミシシッピ州に留学中の、櫻井綾音です！今回が3回目のレポートになりますね。時が経つのは早いです。ついこの間、ちょうど留学してから、帰国するまでの半分を経過しました。日本にいた時よりも時間が早くすぎている気がします(笑)

 

まず、待ちに待ったクリスマスがありましたね！クリスマスの前に１学期が終わって、クリスマスブレイクに突入しました。実は、このクリスマスブレイク、私のホストファミリーは旅行に行く予定とかもなく、毎日暇でした(笑) クリスマスの飾り付けを手伝ったのですが、最初はもう、ウキウキワクワクでお手伝いしていました。クリスマスツリーに飾るオーナメントなどもいちいち配置にこだわって、やっていたのですが、最初に渡された箱に入っていたオーナメントを全て飾りつけ終わって満足して写真撮影をしていると、マザーから新たな箱をまた2個も渡されました。正直、オーナメント多すぎました。最後の方は配置とかどうでもよくなってしまって、適当に飾りつけました(笑) そして、他の留学生や友達を見てると、みんなツリーの下にクリスマスまでにどんどんプレゼントを置いていくんですね。私の家はいたずらな犬が4匹もいたので、クリスマスツリーの下にプレゼントを置くことが出来ず、少し残念でした。結局、クリスマスイブの日にプレゼントのお披露目会をしました。私は家族がマザーとシスターだけだったのでプレゼント費用がかさまなくてよかったです。私はマザーには入浴剤とキャンドルを、ホストシスターにはアロマセラピーが好きなのでアロマオイルをプレゼントしました。そして驚いたのがもらうプレゼントの数です。一個や二個どころじゃなく、プレゼントの山でした。私は少ししか用意しなかったので罪悪感がありましたが、とてもいい思い出になりました。クリスマスの日には、マザーの親戚が集まってクリスマスをお祝いしました。

 

クリスマスが終わればすぐにお正月ですね。私はここでアメリカに来てから二度目のホームシックにかかりました。昨年度、留学していた先輩方から、お正月はものすごく暇だと言う話を聞いたことがありましたが、ここまで孤独なお正月は初めてでした。大晦日の日には、シスターとシスターの叔母さんの家に行き、年を越したのですが、年を越す何分か前に外に行き、花火を上げる準備をしました。日本でやるような手持ち花火ではなくて、結構派手に打ち上がる花火だったのですが、やっぱりいつもの顔ぶれじゃない新年、違和感がものすごくありました。お正月の日も、お昼ご飯はマザーが、これがうちの伝統のお正月料理だと言って、名前忘れてしまったんですけど、なんかの種類の豆と、キャベツを茹でたものとポークチャップを食べたのですが、お餅がないお正月、これまた違和感でした。私のお腹がお餅を欲しがっていました。

 

そして、クリスマスブレイクも終わり、２学期が始まりました。前回のレポートに今学期のクラスは難しいものが多いと書いた覚えがありますが、難しいどころじゃありませんでした。取っている授業は、Marine Biology, English 3, US History なんですけど、もう、毎日宿題（私が授業中で終わらせられなかったものまたは予習、復習がほとんど）の山です。学校が終わって帰ってきたら、部屋に行く前にリビングのテーブルに座ります。そこで宿題を始めまして、夜ご飯、トイレ休憩などを挟み終わるのは大体9時前後です。まだまだ始まったばかりなのでのちに慣れてくれば、効率性を生み出せるとも思うのですが、今はとにかく必死に頑張るしかないと思って気合い入れています。そんな私ですが、とてもUS Historyのクラスを愛しています。授業は大変です。覚えることもたくさんあるし、一番予習と復習に時間がかかるクラスでもあります。ですが、実は日本にいたときから、歴史がすごく好きで、自分の興味のある分野って本当に大変でも、楽しめるものです。このクラスの先生は、学校にいる生徒全員から、政治家や政治評論家のような職業の方が向いていると言われるくらい、物知りです。その分、いろんなことを教えてくれるのですごく勉強になります。そして、アメリカの学生は発言をものすごくすると聞いていましたがこれには本当に圧倒します。私が話している人の方を目で追って目が回りそうになるくらい、みんな積極的です。たくさんこの授業について話したいことあるんですが、すごく長くなりそうなので…本当に話したいけどここには書かないでおきます。

 

英語力については、やっぱり留学する前に想像していた自分とはまだまだ程遠いです。でも、成長したなと感じることは、2学期が始まってから、１学期前半の苦労をたくさん思い出します。本当に毎日何も楽しくなくて聞き取るので誠意いっぱいで会話もまともにできてなっかたのを思い出しますが、今は新学期始まって1週間で新たな友達が２人もできて、連絡先を交換して、授業にも時間はかかれど何とかついていけています。最初の頃の自分だったらできてないこともできるようになって…それでも自分の英語力に焦りがあるのは事実です。もう何度、日本に今の状態のままで帰って後悔してる夢や、ほかの留学生が一気に伸びていて焦りを覚える夢を見たことか…(笑) まあ結局は自分次第なので初心を忘れずに残り半分も頑張って行きたいと思います！

さて、私の留学生活はこんな感じです。２学期に入って忙しくしている合間にチャチャッと書いたので読み苦しい部分もあるかもしれませんがご了承ください。みなさんにとって幸多き一年となりますように！次のレポートでまた会いましょう。

Hello everyone! It is pretty late but Happy New Year! This is my third report from Wiggins, South Mississippi!! It’s hard to believe that it’s already been 6 months since I came to the USA. I feel like it’s going faster than the time I was in Japan and waiting for my exchange year to start. Well, time flies, and I also finished my half of my exchange year.

 

Did you all have a wonderful Christmas? I did have a wonderful and most blessed Christmas ever. But Christmas break was little bit boring because My host family didn’t have any plan to go out of the state during this break. Anyway, I helped my mom decorating for the Christmas. At first, I was having fun with an excitement for the Christmas coming soon. But what was funny is that when I am taking pictures after I hang all of ornaments from the tree, my mom gave me two more boxes of the ornaments. I laughed so hard because I thought I was done. But that was a lot of work. We still have Christmas decorations in the room, but I don’t wanna put the all ornaments back in the boxes… I’ve seen some pictures of presents under the tree which my friends and other exchange students posted, but we didn’t put presents under the tree because we have 4 naughty dogs. That was kind of sad, but I hid presents in my room until the Christmas Eve. We opened all the presents on that day after the dinner. I felt a little bit guilty because I didn’t get much presents for my each of host family member. But I got so many presents, which surprised me a lot. On Christmas Day, my mom’s relative got all together and celebrated a birth of Jesus Christ.

What’s next after the Christmas? Yes, New Year’s Day!! But mine was not that good. Even though I’ve heard that it is gonna be boring, I didn’t expect that I got homesick for the second time since I came here, first time was the day after I arrived. But I still had a good New Year’s Eve, I went to my sister’s aunt’s house with my sister and had a dinner with them. Few minutes before 2018, we went outside and got ready for fireworks. It wasn’t small fireworks which we can hold them, but it was actual fireworks like the one we watch at summer festivals. Those were beautiful. On New Year’s Day, my mom fixed some traditional meal for that day. I forgot the name of beans but I ate beans, cabbages, and pork chops. Bu what I needed on that day was a rice cake. That was the only thing I wanted to eat on New Year’s Day.

 

After the Christmas Break, 2^nd semester has started and I’ve been super busy every day. I think I already told you guys that I have difficult classes in this semester, but those were keeping me busy… I am taking Marine Biology, US History, and English 3, and I have a pile of homework every day after school. From the time I get back home until I go to bed, I am studying all the time. I hope I will get used to it and finish all homework faster than I do now. But there’s one thing I really like about this semester. I love US History class even though it needs review and prepare for the next class. But I am really interested in history and I liked Japanese history class which I took in Japan and I guess that is why I am enjoying US history class. My teacher of this class is really nice, and he is keen to history. Other students say that he could become a politician or political commentator. He knows all about US history and teaches us lots of things. My classmates also always surprise me. Even though I’ve heard that they are aggressive and tell their opinion a lot during the class, we are always like having arguing about the topic we are learning. I wanna talk more about this class, but it might be really long so I guess I should stop right here.
