2026年度の新学期が始まりました。新入生たちも少しずつ学校生活に慣れてきていて、とても楽しそうに見えます。在校生たちも春休みを終えて学校に戻り、新しい学年のスタートをうれしく感じているようです。みんな、学校に来ることを楽しんでいるように見えます。

この時期は、毎年とても忙しく、少し混乱もしがちです。やらなければならないことがたくさんあり、行かなければならない場所もたくさんあります。それでも、やはり新学期はわくわくする時期ですし、新しい生徒たちに出会えるのはいつも本当にうれしいことです。

ただ、そこに私の問題があります。今年は新しい生徒がたくさんいます。つまり、当然ですが、その全員の名前を覚えなければなりません。簡単そうに聞こえるかもしれませんが、最近の私は本当に記憶力がひどいのです。年のせいなのか、ただ疲れているだけなのかは分かりませんが、朝ごはんに何を食べたかさえ思い出せないことがあります。妻に買い物を頼まれると、たいてい半分くらいは買い忘れ、そのかわり頼まれてもいない物を三つくらい買って帰ってしまいます。

ときどき、相手の顔を見ると名前が横に表示されるスマートコンタクトレンズがあったらいいのに、と思います。もちろん、名前を思い出せないときのための方法はいくつか持っています。先生の机の上にある名簿を見ることもできますし、生徒の机の上のノートをさりげなく確認することもできます。友達同士で呼び合っているのを聞くこともできます。先生というのは、いろいろな“裏技”を持っているものなのです。

それでも毎年、最終的にはちゃんと名前を覚えられるようになります。最初は無理だと思っても、座って何度も何度も確認しているうちに、ちゃんと頭に入ってきます。もちろん、まだ少し忘れてしまう名前もありますし、似た響きの名前を混同してしまうこともあります。でも、たいていの生徒の名前は覚えられます。これは記憶力というより、努力なのだと思います。自分で思っているほど、私の記憶力は悪くないのかもしれません。

そして、その努力はするべきことだと思っています。名前というのは、その人にとってとても大切なものだからです。名前は、その人らしさの一部です。相手の名前を覚え、その名前で呼ぶということは、その人の存在を認め、敬意を払うことでもあります。政治家が名前を覚えるためにあれほど努力するのも、そのためなのでしょう。名前を覚えるための方法も、いろいろあるそうです。

名前がどれほど大切かは、私もよく分かっています。だからこそ、きちんと覚える努力をしたいと思います。少し時間はかかるかもしれませんが、きっと大丈夫です。

ただ、ひとつだけ覚えておいてください。先生というのは、たいてい“にぎやかな生徒”の名前から先に覚えるものです。だから、もし私が覚えている名前が自分の名前だけだったら……その理由は分かりますよね。

It is the start of the new 2026 school year. All of our new students are settling in and looking very happy. The older students also look happy to be back after their spring vacation and to start a new school year. Most people do seem to be happy to be at school. This time of year is always very busy and confusing for everyone. There are so many things to sort out and so many places to be. It is always exciting, though. And it is always wonderful to meet new students.

And, therein lies my problem. I have so many new students this year and, of course, I have to learn all of their names. I know that doesn’t sound hard, but these days my memory is terrible. I don’t know if it is because I am getting older, or if it is because I am tired, but I can’t even remember what I had for breakfast. When my wife asks me to go shopping, I invariably forget at least half of the things she asked me to buy and come back with at least three things she never asked for.

I sometimes wish I had smart contact lenses so people’s names would just appear next to their faces when I look at them. I have several methods to find someone’s name if I can’t remember it. I can look at the name chart on the teacher’s desk. I can try to find a notebook on the student’s desk. I can listen to them talking to their friends. There are many tricks up a teacher’s sleeves.

However, every year I always do manage to remember names. I think I can’t and then I sit down and I go through them again and again until I remember them. There are still a few I forget, and I sometimes confuse similar sounding names, but I remember most people’s names. It is effort more than memory. I don’t think my memory is anywhere near as bad as I think it is.

And it is effort that I should make because a person’s name is the most important thing about them. Our names are part of who we are. To learn and to use someone’s name means that you acknowledge and you respect them. That is one reason why politicians work so hard to be able to remember names. They have several techniques to do it.

I know how important a name is and I will make the effort to remember them. It might take me a while, but I’ll get there. And think of this: teachers always remember the noisy student’s names first. So, if yours is the only name I remember, you know why… …
