When I arrived Adelaide, I was excited because I was looking forward to going there. I talked about my family, Japanese culture and more with my host father in his car while we were going to my host family’s house.

When I arrived my host family’s house, my host mother gave me a hug. I had host mother, father, international students from China and Vietnam. They were kind to me, but they didn’t come out from their bedroom without dinner time so I had hard time to communicate with other people. Vietnamese international student went same school as me. She spend in Australia for five years from she and I arrived and when I met her for the first time, she wasn’t good at English very much. So communicating with her was very difficult.

I went Banksia Park International High School in Australia. I had math, history, photography, drama, ISEC English, ISEC cultural studies, ISEC science. Teachers used to talk to international students because our school was international school so they were kind to us. My school had many Japanese international students. That was fine. I was relieved at first. But I went to Australia to study English with a lot of talking with English speakers. I confirmed that again. After that, I had lunch and recess with Australian students as I could. I especially got along with Lilli, Isabella and Grace in the group of lunch and recess. They spoke slowly without my asking. Isabella talked to me in Japanese a little bit because she had Japanese classes at school. Although Lilli didn’t have Japanese classes, Isabella taught her some Japanese words and she tried to talk in Japanese. I went to the shopping mall near my school with Grace. We were shopping together. And I became friends with Jimmy in my drama class. I’m keeping in touch with him the most. We worked together when we had to work in a pair. In fact, we didn’t talk each other while I was in Adelaide. But we talked about films, TV games, my friends and more since I came back to Japan. I had wonderful experiences and made awesome friends. I wish I will be able to go to Adelaide and see my friends again.

 

アデレードでの一か月は長いようで短く、短いようで長く、私の少ない語彙では表しきれないほどとても濃いものでした。海外に行くのも初めてで、しかもそこで一か月生活するとなると不安も募って当然のように思えますが、出発する前の私はそこまで緊張も不安もありませんでした。もちろん全く無かったわけではありません。友達を作れるかどうかは私にとって死活問題でしたし、自分から話しかけに行くなんて日本語でも出来ないのに英語でどうするんだなんて考えもしました。でもリスニングには多少自信があったし、スピーキングもゆっくりなら大丈夫、しかもあっちでは24時間英語漬けなんだし、なんて思っていました。その考えが全くの馬鹿であったと実感するための時間はそう長くは要りませんでした。つまるところ私は自分の英語力を過信していて、実際スムーズなコミュニケーションは取れませんでした。

私のホストファミリーはもう何人も留学生を受け入れている家だったので留学生の私にはゆっくり話してくれましたが、それでも私にとっては十分速く、初めのころは何度も聞き返しました。

私のホストスクールのBanksia Park International High Schoolはインターナショナルというだけあり、留学生を何人も受け入れていましたし、日本語の話せる先生もいました。特に留学生と接する機会も多かったMr. Ferrisは、Historyの先生が授業で原爆について扱うため日本人の留学生達もそのトピックで大丈夫か心配している、ということを日本語で話してくれたり、バスの定期を落とした私にStudent Servicesに行くといいとアドバイスをくれたりしました。Mr. Ferris以外の先生達や生徒達もとても親切にしてくれました。MathのMr. Vienはまだ私がBanksia Parkに通い始めたばかりの頃、きちんとホストファミリーとコミュニケーションを取れているか聞いてくれました。友達のGraceは私がピアノを弾いている動画を見て褒めてくれ、好きな作曲家などの話をしました。心からBanksia Parkで学ぶことができて良かったと思います。

私がオーストラリアで一か月の間してもらったことは数知れません。英語を学んでそれで終わりではなく、楽しいことも辛いことも経験しました。辛いことも含めて、高校生のうちに経験できたことはとても貴重で素晴らしいことだと思っています。留学に行ったことで、日本の友人や家族、いつもの生活の有難みに気づくこともできました。留学前後サポートしてくれた北星の先生や留学させてくれた両親に心から感謝しています。
