This summer I went to Adelaide and I could experience a lot of things that I hadn’t before.

I will tell you a few things that I experienced in Adelaide.

I went to Golden Grove High School during my study in Adelaide. On my first day of school, I went to school with my host mother and I met two Japanese students who were also starting school that day. We met the teacher first, and then got are time schedules and looked around the school to know where the classrooms are. After that, we got are school uniform and once I wore it, it felt very cold for me. And we got are locker keys and went to the lockers to put my bags in. The lockers were a bit difficult to use for the first week because I do not use it in Japan. And I went for two classes which were left for the day.

The subject that I liked the most was drama. The drama teacher was very kind and always asked me if I understand the information. In the beginning and in the end of the class, we played some easy games so I could communicate with a lot of students at that time so it was very fun. In drama class, I was learning “the theater of absurd” which was very difficult. Since the class was too difficult, so I did something different things such as acting out Japanese anime or movies in English. It was a bit difficult in the beginning but in the end, I could act it out in front of the teacher and my classmates. The students who were in the same classes in Japanese and science class would often wave to me and I also ate lunch with them. Sometimes, we went to the small shopping mall in front of the school after we finished school.

I will tell you a little about my host family. My host family was only a host mother and a dog so I felt a little lonely in the beginning but since my host mother was a very cheerful and a funny woman, she always made me laugh so I had a great time there. In the weekends, I went to the city and went shopping or to the zoos or spend some time with my host mother’s family and made some Australian snacks with her. Every weekend was so exciting and I enjoyed completely everything. Sometimes I went to the shopping mall which was about 30 minutes by bus from my school and did some shopping there. Since the shopping mall is near my host mother’s work, we usually met after a couple of hours and ate dinner. I ate foods from different country and it was most that I had not eaten before.

Even though it was a short time in Adelaide, I came up to some difficulties, and I could feel thankful for a lot of things in my life and Japan so I think I experienced things that I had not before. In a month in Adelaide, I learned that the most important thing is to have your own opinion or ideas constantly and not only think about it, but to share your ideas or what you think.

My stay was with a 34 year old woman. She was a very kind and friendly person. She helped me with many things and took me to very nice places on weekends. Her house was near the train station and a supermarket, so it was very convenient for me. She had two dogs and they welcomed me every day when I opened the door coming home from school. She was busy during the week and we had dinner at eight. She was a good cook and prepared various types of dinners. Some evenings I helped her cook. For the last dinner, we made makizushi together. We got “sushi rice” and nori, and for the ingredients we made tempura and used avocado. We had a very good time trying to get the shape right and trying not to put in too many ingredients.

This evening time was meaningful for me because I’m not used to talking to people I first meet. I spoke with her a lot during dinner. We ate pavlova and watched Australian movies. Pavlova was not the only Australian thing I ate. She made a roasted pork dish for me. It’s a traditional Australian dish. We also had meat pie several times. She had bought vegemite so I was having that for breakfast every morning.

My school was Seaton High School. It was 30 minutes away from where I was staying. On the first day, I had a budy with me to guide me around the school. My classes were mostly main stream, except for the Japanese class I took instead of the Personal learning class. We joined a 9th grade Japanese class. This class was not difficult. In fact, it was the easiest class I had. But I enjoyed this class very much. The students were interested in Japan and they asked us many questions. It was hard to believe that these students were a year younger than me. The first two weeks were mainly communicating with Seaton High students and making lists of our favorite foods. After two weeks, 20 Japanese students joined our class. We did games, group works and cooking classes together. The cooking classes were, of course, Japanese food cooking classes. We made curry rice, gyoza, yakisoba, and mushi-pan. It was very fun.

Sometimes I got lost coming home from school. But everything was ok. My host mother, Marta was very kind and she helped me many times. I learned that asking for help is not embarrassing.

Every weekend went by so fast. I will write about the first one. My host mother’s friend had a beach house 4 hours away. Me and my host mother and her dogs stayed here for one night. We visited the Innes National Park the next day. I was very excited. The national park was a beautiful place. There was a wild kangaroo crossing the street. I took many photos thinking that this is something you cannot experience in Japan.

Teaching origami to my host mother’s friend’s children was also a special experience. When they saw what I could make with one peace of paper, they were amazed. They liked everything I made for them. I was very happy.

I wanted to talk to many people but sometimes I got nervous. I felt that thinking positively is an important thing. I had a good experience and made special memories during this one month.

When I arrived Adelaide, I was excited because I was looking forward to going there. I talked about my family, Japanese culture and more with my host father in his car while we were going to my host family’s house.

When I arrived my host family’s house, my host mother gave me a hug. I had host mother, father, international students from China and Vietnam. They were kind to me, but they didn’t come out from their bedroom without dinner time so I had hard time to communicate with other people. Vietnamese international student went same school as me. She spend in Australia for five years from she and I arrived and when I met her for the first time, she wasn’t good at English very much. So communicating with her was very difficult.

I went Banksia Park International High School in Australia. I had math, history, photography, drama, ISEC English, ISEC cultural studies, ISEC science. Teachers used to talk to international students because our school was international school so they were kind to us. My school had many Japanese international students. That was fine. I was relieved at first. But I went to Australia to study English with a lot of talking with English speakers. I confirmed that again. After that, I had lunch and recess with Australian students as I could. I especially got along with Lilli, Isabella and Grace in the group of lunch and recess. They spoke slowly without my asking. Isabella talked to me in Japanese a little bit because she had Japanese classes at school. Although Lilli didn’t have Japanese classes, Isabella taught her some Japanese words and she tried to talk in Japanese. I went to the shopping mall near my school with Grace. We were shopping together. And I became friends with Jimmy in my drama class. I’m keeping in touch with him the most. We worked together when we had to work in a pair. In fact, we didn’t talk each other while I was in Adelaide. But we talked about films, TV games, my friends and more since I came back to Japan. I had wonderful experiences and made awesome friends. I wish I will be able to go to Adelaide and see my friends again.

MathMr.

This summer, I had wonderful time that I had never imagined in Adelaide, Australia. Before I went, I didn’t expect much about my study abroad because it was my first time going abroad so I couldn’t imagine well and I thought 1 month is too short to learn something. However, this month was the most fruitful month in my life. I would like to share a little bit about my experience with you.

First of all, I’ll write about my home stay. I had mother, father, old sister who is 20, and a dog called Benji in my host family. I was the first person to go back home because they all have their jobs. Every day, they asked me “how was the school?” when they came home. Moreover, they gave me a lot of chances to use English in daily life like when we were eating dinner or watching TV. Benji was the most friendly dog I’ve ever met. He was running to welcome me and we were always together. Any time, they loved and respected one another so much. I’m so glad that I could be a member of such a great family. I can confidently say that my host family is the best! I lived in near the mountain so when host father said me “let’s take a walk with Benji”, it means almost climbing a mountain, not walking on a sidewalk. It was a little bit hard but lots of fun because I could see wild koalas or many unique plants, also he told me about Australia a lot. I loved that time so much.

Second, I will write about my host school. Aberfoyle Park high school I went had over thousand students and huge site. I have no sense of direction, so every time I had classes made me confused. In addition, sometimes many kinds of accident happened. For example, I was late for classes, went to toilet for boys (It was really just a mistake!), and missed a school bus. Anyway, there were many unique students in there like the one eating apple, putting their foot on the desk, and listening a music during classes. However, all of teacher didn’t reprimand them for that. From that, I learned what people think is common is different from each country. At first, I thought “how bad Australian students are” but I realized those were usual and allowed in this school. I can’t decide what is good or bad without knowing other cultures.

At last, I spent one month as a super positive girl. The most important thing is enjoy everything because it is natural that all of things are different from japan. Then, I tried to find small happiness every day like “this tall boy passed me a ball for the first time at the PE!” or “I could join in a conversation with a family from me!”. Everything is up to me, so I would like to keep trying to make my school days better.
